How did the twinning come about?
Leeds is twinned with Dortmund and there's an explanation here, from the Dortmund end

A recent reassertion of the relationship from the Leeds end

There is a Dortmund Square in Leeds, with a statue of a Dortmund Drayman

Beer seems to have played a part in these cultural links

First mention of Garton's Glucose that I have heard for a long time. My stepmother's father was a foreman in that factory. Stayed working there through WW2 while the rest of the family was evacuated to Cornwall.
Brilliant, small world, did he or your stepmother ever mention the pong ?
There was another glucose factory by the southern entrance to the Blackwall Tunnel I think, but it was at a slight distance so less offensive to the hooter.
The stench of molasses at Blackwall meant we were nearly at my grandparents, it was nasty but nowhere near as bad as Chettles glue factory at Irchester Northants, near where i grew up - with the wrong wind you could smell it five miles away!
Convention? what's that then?
Airnimal Chameleon touring, Orbit Pro hack, Orbit Photon audax, Focus Mares AX tour, Peugeot Carbon sportive, Owen Blower vintage race - all running Tulio's finest!

I was in Leeds yesterday and thought of your post TC.
Despite having lived in Leeds for five years, and having walked past this many times going to do my shopping at the Sainsburys next to it, I'd never realised what it was about. I thought it was just a Chinese (!) bloke lifting a barrel of some sort, there are enough strange statues dotted around the city centre to make that idea not seem unusual. You Loin something everyday !
