Ten Miles a Day
Re: Ten Miles a Day
Just ticked over 3650 miles, (retired, so no commuting). So thats it, Feet up till January 1st!
Re: Ten Miles a Day
Having been out of commission and in hospital for a few years (more bits dropping off) I've finally been back on the bike again this summer.
Helps being in France where it's a bit warmer, and I started off trying to ride 50s each day (miles, that is - 80k), half of what I used to think was acceptable when I was younger.
Struggled at first, but after a month things came a bit easier and I found that I was stopping earlier and earlier - seven weeks now for 2448 miles (3916k).
The weather is getting cold and damp so I'll go on as long as I can.
70 this year, so not too bad for an 'old un'!
regards to all, Braz.

Braz!
You're back!
I have been in Callington, and asking about you, but no news. I'd given up.
Glad to hear you're up and about, and glad to hear you're on the mend.
Regards,
Mick.

Re: Ten Miles a Day
Yes Mick, tis I.
I doubt if 'mend' applies - in my state, so drinking plenty of cheap French wine whilst I still can. No.1 best class rose, 2 bottles for 3 Euros.
Good to be back on a bike, even if it is a 35 year old Holdsworth - one that is, unlike me, still going strong.
Must be time for another 'End to End' soon - I need one more to reach my 'coming of age'. Next spring or summer, surgeons willing. Now which way should I think of going ..........? Oh yes, I remember, turn left at Longrock.
kind regards, Braz.

Re: Ten Miles a Day
CTC or other touring holidays are the answer. if you don't train in advance, you'll suffer. Book the holiday and it gives all the impetus you need.
Re: Ten Miles a Day
I suffered a lack of mojo earlier this year, I picked up a new bike at the end of may and set myself a challenge of 1500 miles before new the new year with a new GPS as a reward, I am currently at 1090 miles averaging just over 10 miles a day and thinking of increasing the goal, I do it with a mix of commuting into work and long way home rides and riding with the Mrs at weekends. My enthusiasm has bloomed, I am even looking forward to a winter on the road/trail.
Re: Ten Miles a Day
I try and do 8 hours a week and totally ignore miles. The beauty of this way is the release from the tyranny of mileage.I can do a hilly course, mountain bike etc. and don,t feel I need to get the miles in,just the time.
Re: Ten Miles a Day
Funny you should mention that.
I did a "gentle" thirty mile ride yesterday. I was wondering what the difference was between Gentle and Vigorous, or between Hilly and Flat. Miles is one thing, but Distance and Effort are other things entirely.
Time is yet another dimension to it.
I also wondered about Calories. My computer work out all this stuff and the calories expended are proportional to the effort over time with hills and speed as well of course.
So far this year, I've done 3,359miles with 323,792ft of Total Ascent, and consumed 200,900 calories in doing it.
Time in the saddle was 263hrs
Equals about 765cals per hour.

Re: Ten Miles a Day
Hi,
When I did a lot of long distance walking I would look at the map and divide the miles by 3, this would give the hours I would spend getting somewhere, I only then would concentrate on the hours left in the day.
765 kcal consumed would be about 160 W at the pedals.

Where do you get that figure from?NATURAL ANKLING wrote:765 kcal consumed would be about 160 W at the pedals.
I'm not saying it's wrong, just at variance with my computer program.
My average power for this year so far is recorded as 132W.
If that figure of mine is "at the wheel", perhaps I lose 28W in the transmission?

Re: Ten Miles a Day
Hi,
I just used an approximation of 21 %, which is what the human body can get from the food consumed
No doubt we will get better explanations from others here.
On my turbo trainer I get same fiqures but my heart rate monitor is different ( HRM inputs age weight and min max HR, exercise level, etc etc, ?)
Your computer uses probably some sort of interpolination like my HRM and the turbo trainer

Over to the experts here.....................

Re: Ten Miles a Day
My Garmin 705 records everything it can of course, and I upload the ride history into Ascent - a Mac based activity program. All of the data is re-calculated using HR, elevation profile, speed, rider weight and age and bike weight. The power readout is as good as a program can get I suppose.
You can, of course, use a PowerTap hub.

Re: Ten Miles a Day
hI,
Sorry I was not that accurate.
1 kcal + 1.163 Watt.
So 765 kcal = 889.7 Watts
But human body efficiency is approx 20 - 24 %
So 178 - 213.5 Watts.
You really need to meaure with resistance and a power meter / cranks.
All computer generated is just estimated with a few statistics.
Yes possible time and speed and body weight would be power at the wheel / road.

All here I think -

Re: Ten Miles a Day
Hi,
Ten miles a day, struggling on 5 at the moment, waiting results of full blood test whiich is well over due by nearly six months
Should be once a year, anyone on long term meds for BP or and Cholesterol like me should have yearly Full blood test to check for organ performance and damage / blood disorders. It may not be apparent if you dont exercise at all or at low level.
My endurance time before discomfort leading to me dismounting the bike has gone from 3 hours (2012 18 hours+) to 50 miniutes or less in two months.
Interesting reading below.

Re: Ten Miles a Day
Yesterday was day 315 so at 8 miles per day for me that should mean 2520 miles so far.
Currently sitting on 2720 miles which is exactly 200 miles above my target! In fact to hit my yearly target I only need to ride another 200 miles before the end of the year. Should hit that pretty easily I think. I should be able to go above 3000 miles with any luck!
