Abergavenny - Cardiff route advice

Can anyone advise a good route for this? I live 4 miles SE of Abergavenny so can easily get to Newport by picking up the sustrans route at Pontypool and following all the way to the castle or following the river through USK and Carleon. There is a Sustrans route between the two cities but it's obviously been designed for scenery rather than efficiency. There's a B road near the coast but that also means going through Newport. I'm sure there must be a way to cut the corner around Newport/Cwmbran but can't see a way that doesn't involve big hills or long detours to find bridges. The M4 would be ideal but is probably not a good idea!
