What are the pleasures of cycling in your city? And what difficulties and risks do you encounter when you ride your bike? We want to see what cycling infrastructure is like in cities all over the world

Somebody posted a link to a fantastic site showing the totally mad cycle paths in the UK - but I've never been able to find it again. But people must have some classic photos to add to the Guardian album and embarrass those responsible for UK cycling infrastructure.

(And I am nothing to do with the Guardian just I noticed their request).

Shouldn't someone realise that cycling's not only about cities? I live in a town of nearly 30,000 inhabitants: it's not classed as a city, but I do plenty of cycling in it. And it has the odd 'facility', most of them 'farcilities'... Should I submit some piccies to the Graun?

It had me in tears,as do most other facility of the month photos on their site

Sadly if you go to Galway in Ireland you will encounter cycle lanes which proceed in that fashion for much longer distances, and which moreover it is compulsory for the cyclist to use. Whilst British cycle lane arrangements can be poor, there are some places where they can be even poorer.

Actually, the September 2007 picture isn't quite as it seems: it was taken through a very long-focus lens and hence the distances between the signs are grossly foreshortened. That's not to say that the sequence isn't utterly idiotic though. I believe the signs have since been taken down or modified...

Having said that, I could point to an equally asinine collection of signs in Haywards Heath, in connection with the new by-pass ("You've got to build by-passes", as Prosser so aptly put it). Trouble is, to get the entire ridiculous collection in one frame, I'd need a fish-eye lens, and I don't have such a thing.

I can supply plenty of photographs of idiotic, crazy and downright stupid cycle lanes, but unfortunately, they are not in a city.

They are mostly in towns, villages and hamlets. The Guardian don't want these.

My thoughts exactly (as I said earlier). The Grauniad has developed a distinctly 'townie' bias in recent years. Not all dwellers in the sticks are diehard reactionary tories!

Calling hamlets like Upper Snodsbury a ‘city’ is an American thing which Garmin use extensively. The media, when it comes to any subject, attempt to talk in the language of the subject.
IMO, the reporter at The Guardian has or has access to a Garmin and thinks all cyclists call country hamlets a ‘city’ like Garmin do.

If this is true, the media don't know us.

This particular journo doesn't seem to have much in the way of cycling 'credentials' anyway. Where's Peter Walker when we need him?

They [the Guardian] have posted the results of their request.

Not as good as the Warrington one. I like the last one (Brussels Cyclo Guerilla); more because of what they are doing.
