I have a pair of Shimano Saints and they are very nice. As mentioned some pedals are "shin shredders" I know from experience, I consider mine not to be.

Perfect thread - I have been trying to work out which way to go. I have a new e-MTB (don't hate) and have had clip in's for previous person powered MTB. But pretty much everyone I ride with has flats, because they're scared of clipping in and not being able to get out. We've all been there as a newbie - and thankfully there were no cars coming when I had my moment!

So, I guess I'm going to join the others and flats it is - although I don't have to walk up hill/trails as much now as I did - thank you 32v engine!

just to add a comment about bearings; DMR V8s (and most similar looking copies such as wellgo LU987) have traditional adjustable ball bearings. Provided you keep them adjusted, the water out and the grease in, they last really well.

However some of the pedals mentioned in this thread have a plain bushing at the inboard end and one or more tiny cartridge bearings at the outboard end. You can build a slimmer and slightly lighter pedal this way, and the bearings are often described (misleadingly) as 'sealed' or 'cartridge' type, glossing over the fact that there is a cheesy DU bushing in there. However these bearings might feel Ok when you spin the pedals but they have considerably more friction under load (x10 to x100 according to the bearing manufacturer's own figures) and they wear out/break too. Pedals of this type included DMR V12 and DMR V6, as well as other wellgo models and so forth.

There are a few flat pedals that are also quite slim (which folk seem to like for some reason) and have good ball-bearings in them; shimano MX80 are one such.

cheers

So, these for £12 seems a bit of a bargain.

same bearing system in saints as is fitted to most shimano SPD pedals IIRC. Responds well to TLC.

The Wellgo DMR V8 copies are pretty good for a tenner and come with reflectors.
