What bike should I get?

Post by paularope92 »

Hi people I'm new to this forum.

I'm wanting to buy a new mountain bike and have been looking around, however it's been a few years since I last had one.

I'm having to buy it on finance so kind of limits the places that I can buy from. I've been looking at one on halfords http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... reId=10001

I'm not sure what to get though as It's been awhile and not clued up on what's best. I'll be using it mainly off road on river banks etc. but will also be used very little on the streets. It will be used on average of 7miles a day so looking for something decent.

The most I'm willing to spend is £500 however would like to keep below that if possible.

Thank you for any advice that you lot can give me.

Hi, are you sure that you will need a full mountain bike? You'll be carrying around additional weight when the terrain might not justify it, especially suspension forks. Evans has a much wider selection than Halfords, and finance from £499.

This has much to commend it, for instance: https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-li ... e-EV275574

That's a pretty aggressive machine - 120mm suspension is overkill for anything other than trail centres. It will be fine for the job but somewhat overspecified for towpaths.

If it's a £500 mountain bike you want, that seems a good one, it's come top of the reviews several times. I know someone at work with one and although they do some serious off road, 95% of their use is less extreme than yours, they love it. I wouldn't want suspension forks for light off road use, but some people do and at least they're not the bottom end ones seen on some bikes at that price point. Not only should you consider if they'll add anything to your ride, but also that they add cost and complexity, to keep them working well they'll need frequent maintenance.
This bike from Halfords, looks pretty similar, rigid forks and £100 cheaper
