Being the pedant that I am the map with all of the national trails on has a spelling mistake.

Its Fort Augustus rather than Ford.

I have done the first 60 miles of the Great North trail and its great although I was a little under-biked with a gravel bike in places.

Route launched today - hopefully the first batch of pre-ordered guide books will have hit doormats today as well

Our guidebook author has produced some videos giving a proper detailed insight into the route and history.

GPX is here: https://www.cyclinguk.org/route/king-al ... -gpx-route . Looks great.

(Zulu Eleven, can you get your website team to make the OpenStreetMap credit on the map a little bigger, please, so it's actually legible? Thank you!)

Looks great, I did the section between Avebury and the A34 quite recently on my Gravel bike.

thanks - from a very quick look the file for the whole route appears to have a fait bit of text in it, whereas the individual bits are rawer - just points.

I'll use/edit the rawer ones - I like simplicity, and my etrex is pretty simple.

must say i fancy doing this as a freecamping circuit in the offseason (rapidly approaching) when the casual junk dumpers will have departed.
From what I have very quickly read of it my 26 inch exped bike with some strong tyres sounds ideal - won't be in a hurry.

For londoners, Reading looks like a good place to join - easily reached via the London/Oxford ncn route.

Stupid question, could I do it on a recumbent trike
A laid back, low down, layabout recumbent triker!

I don't know, and I'd suggest asking Cycling UK and the author of that piece in the Guardian.

Jonathan

PS: Why "stupid"? This forum has a much bigger problem with people asserting things that aren't true than with people who'd like to know more and ask accordingly.

As the saying goes, there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers.

PS not Jonathan's answer!

: - )

... never worry about ignorance, it's stupidity that causes the problems.

Featured on BBC South news yesterday.

The Cycling UK rep interviewed acknowledged that parts of the route were a bit overgrown.

No lift-over gates, but Kesteven doesn't mention how they do control access.

I’m going to stress that this is an off-road adventure route designed for gravel/MTB bikes on mainly unpaved paths, ancient byways and Saxon herepaths

I’d recommend watching the detailed videos (our guidebook author, Guy Kesteven, is a professional bike tester and ex-archaeologist) - theres Two hours of video here to see exactly what the trails are like, along with just some of the historical highlights of the route
