Hi people, Planning yet again to cycle the above, After my buddy had a heart attack last September and will not be fit to do this tour. Originally we were to cycle towards Hendaye then the coastal route up towards Bergerac over to Poitiers then the Loire valley, Caen, coast road to Cherbourg or similar ish. Anyone know what I could expect weather wise, will I be assisted by a tail wind and will my white legs turn brown ? .I expect to do a bit of camping, B and B , Hostels. I don't really want to cycle alone especially with the luck I've had in the past so anyone interested in doing this trip please let me know. Average speed 10 mls an hour,60 mls a day, stops for coffee cake photo's etc. 3 weeks/4 weeks i'm easy on time. This will be my 67 th birthday tour. Thanks ,T.

Totally pot luck on weather. When I went the opposite way a few years ago in May it was bloody cold and wet for much of the time. At least the wind is more likely to be with you.

Just the sort of trip I want to do now I am retired, unfortunately (or fortunately) I should be having my left hip replaced in April (to match the right one replaced 2 years ago), so I don't think I would be up to it. Good luck, I'd love to know the route you take and how you get on.

Hi dodger, thanks for the input but I hope you're gonna be wrong regarding the weather, It's one thing having to ride in the rain etc but having to possibly put a tent up then camp when you're wet is another matter. I may have to B and B or Hostel. Do you still have your route details ?.
Tizme, good luck with your coming op,[no pun there, honest ] I hope all will be ok and you're up and cycling real soon. I am due for knee replacement soon myself. I want to get a tour in before that tho. Tizme where about are you based ?, we may still be able to get a ride together, i'm in Wimborne. 8 miles from the Britanny ferry in Poole Dorset.
Always looking for a future cycling/ touring buddy. thanks T.

Hello Tim. You sound like a carbon copy of me being 67 and with a dodgy knee! I have done this trip, or parts of it, several times and the weather has been variable. I intend doing a tour in May and am interested in doing some of this trip with you but would be wanting to get the ferry back from Roscoff. When are you planning to go?

John

Hi John, I did a tour back in April 2012 with someone called John from, Taunton, Plymouth,Roscoff, ferry then along the canal down to Josselin , Eventually Santander. I don't suppose that was you ? .Anyway what I have booked at present is,= Saturday 19 May at 8.45 ferry from Portsmouth to Santander, including 2 people + 2 bikes in a cabin for the overnight trip arriving 14.15. cost £130. each. still to book and pay for overnight accommodation at Portsmouth prior to catching the ferry. I have not booked a return ferry. I will return via Cherbourg but if you or anyone else chooses a different route back that's no problem. We could part company perhaps Bordeaux I may then head East ish. I speak NO French or Spanish.
Thanks T.

T, I'm about half a mile or so to the east of the Bath & West Showground, near Shepton Mallet.

I do hope the NHS op delays don't go on too long, I went out today, 26 miles at an average of just 11mph, now I can hardly walk  SWMBO was not happy, will be even less when I tell her I've got my eye on a new frame to build up during my "recuperation"

Tim, going from Portsmouth doesn't suit me. I usually go to and from Plymouth. Too complicated with either trains or cars getting to Portsmouth.

Enjoy your trip.

Hi Ernst, regarding your comments on where to travel from, IE ferries. I have cycled down to Plymouth to catch a ferry to Roscoff and as you say it's not an easy route, more the busy roads than the hills and lumps and the trains are crap. Its not too bad across the New Forest from Wimborne to Portsmouth, Even easier to catch the Poole ferry and go anywhere. Good Touring to all, T.

Hi all regarding this trip that is planned ,sailing from Portsmouth to Santander on 19 May this year. It does not look like my buddy is going to do this tour after his Big Heart op back in September. Do I still do this leisurely trip back towards Cherbourg on my own or perhaps scrap it yet again and stay closer to home.My concerns, at 67 health issues, bike safety, none French speaking, not a lot I suppose. I would be grateful for your thoughts and comments. cheers T.
