York Rally 2019: 22-23 June

Postby bikepete » 29 Jul 2018, 6:58pm

Just a note that the as-yet provisional dates for the York Rally 2019 are 22-23 June 2019. Those dates are unlikely to change, but we can't confirm completely until the horse racing calendar is released.

We'll also be running our 2019 fundraising Sportive on Sunday 28 April 2019, with 100k and 140k routes into the North York Moors. Both riders and volunteers will be needed - so please do put it in the diary if you can get to York that day!

Campsite bookings, and Sportive online entries, will open soon, and I'll post updates here. The York Rally website is also due a revamp... meanwhile images and videos of the 2018 York Rally are online now. If anyone has any contributions to add, please do send them to publicity@yorkrally.org :-)

We've also re-jigged our York Rally merchandise page where you can buy a good selection of Rally badges (cheaper than on Ebay!) including this year's. And we have a good selection of clothing in stock too...

Image

Our next Rally organising meeting is set to be on the 15th September in York, venue to be confirmed... will update once decided! As ever, all are welcome.

Apologies for the late update - forgot to confirm here that the next York Rally planning meeting is at 10AM on the 15th September 2018 (tomorrow!) at the St Chad's on the Knavesmire Church Hall, Campleshon Road, York. All are welcome! Please just let us know if you would like a lift from the railway station.

Just a quick note that the dates for the York Rally 2019 are now confirmed. It'll take place on the weekend of 22-23 June 2019, and we look forward to seeing many of you there!

Campsite bookings and Saddlebag Sale table reservations will open shortly - please watch this space for further announcements.

We'll also be revamping the website, Facebook and Twitter graphics and much more. And we've done a first draft of the 2019 leaflet...

Plus, watch out soon for news of a 'classic' addition to our annual fundraising Sportive!

Finally for now, our next planning meeting (and AGM) will be on Saturday 24th November 2018 at St Chad's Church Hall, just by the Knavesmire, from 10AM. As ever, all are welcome to attend!

Click to enlarge the draft leaflet - and apologies in advance that the main image features only helmet-wearing riders - we couldn't resist the big grin of the featured cyclist! Our full image collection from the 2018 York Rally shows that the Rally welcomes all comers, whatever your headgear preference :-)

My offer to provide a presentation on the helmet issue still stands, extra research has come to light and its always good to hear some of the back ground and progress is slowing being made in understanding the wider aspects.

Have you got a suitable photo for the programme cover? The photo for 2018 caused some comment and interpretation :?

Colin - many thanks! I'll be in touch nearer the time.

Brynpoeth - I don't usually get round to laying out the show programme until May/June, so plenty of time to decide. But for the programme cover we will most likely just use the same image as on the leaflet.

More announcements coming shortly but for now I am happy to announce:

Campsite bookings
Campsite bookings are open now for the York Rally 2019, at super-earlybird discounted rates until end of December! Book your space now, online or by post if you prefer.

Saddlebag Sale
Bookings for tables at our 2019 Saddlebag Sale Cycle Jumble are also now open. Table numbers are limited by the space available to 50, and in recent years these have often sold out. Book early to secure yours - and note that prices rise at the end of December from the £10 earlybird rate to £12. Again, both online and postal options are available.

Donate your items and help raise funds for the Rally!
Note that once again we will be reserving a table at the Saddlebag Sale for items donated by Rally-goers: in 2018 this raised a tremendous total of around £450 for Rally funds. Any unsold items are donated to a local organisation providing cycles for recently arrived refugees. So if anyone has any cycle parts, accessories or similar you could bring along in 2019 to donate to help support the Rally, please do! Full details are on the Saddlebag Sale page on the Rally website. Declutter and donate :-)

York Rally & Coxwold cards
After a number of requests, here once again are cards to promote the York Rally and the Coxwold Cyclists' Service - both traditional Yorkshire cycling events run entirely by volunteers and with a long heritage! Please do support them both by attending if you can - and even if you can't, please do print out this PDF onto A4 paper, cut it up and distribute these cards to fellow cyclists as you're out and about!

Cyclists from the Sheffield area will be congregating at Meadowhall Station Car Park at 10:00 am on Friday 21 June for the 55 mile ride to the Knavesmire for the weekend. For Sheffielders pre booking their lightweight plot, please remember to state 'Sheffield CTC' at the bottom of the form so we are not scattered all over the camp site.

Merry Christmas – York Rally update!
Christmas greetings from the York Rally team and our best wishes for safe and enjoyable cycling in 2019! We’ve a few developments to report since the last update, but the main thing to mention is the reduced-rate booking deadlines for campsite and Saddlebag Sale:

Campsite bookings – last week of super-earlybird!
You can save a tenner on campsite bookings for the York Rally 2019 if you get your skates on! Booking at the super-earlybird rates is available until end of December, so book now to save. Advance bookings really help our planning, too.
  • For 2019, we are looking to streamline the check-in process, especially for pre-booked campers, to prevent the queues which developed in 2018. So in 2019, campers who book in advance will be able to check in and have pitches allocated from 3PM, so that when the site opens at 4PM you can go straight on. We cannot allow vehicles on site before 4PM: the hard-working volunteer set-up team needs the time to fully prepare the site and make it safe.
  • Could you perhaps arrive early and be part of that team? We’re always looking for more volunteers to help out in the days before the Rally opens, to set up the site. Please just make a regular campsite booking and add a note that you’d like to arrive early – or register here as a volunteer – and as a helper you’ll be most welcome to camp the extra nights (Wednesday and/or Thursday) at no extra cost.
  • Unfortunately the Rally’s finances do not yet permit any volunteer discounts, so all volunteers (and indeed Committee members) camping on site do need to make a standard booking. Thank you in advance for your support!

Saddlebag Sale: prices rise at end December!
2019 bookings for the Saddlebag Sale (the Rally’s cycle jumble, which takes place on the Sunday), are also open now at the earlybird rate of £10 – this rises to £12 after the end of December 2018. In 2018, as you will have seen, we had a table set aside outside the Saddlebag Sale for donated cycling gear, which was sold to raise funds for the Rally. This raised a tremendous £450 and we’re hoping that next year we can raise even more. So please do save up any unwanted parts and accessories, good condition clothing and even complete bikes which you might like to donate to help the Rally. Simply bring your items to next year’s Rally and drop them off ASAP at Rally HQ, or at the Sportive, or we can also accept them at any of our regular planning meetings in York.

In other news
  • Many thanks to all of the committed volunteers who agreed, at this year’s AGM in late November, to serve for another year on the Rally organising committee. We could always use more willing hands – please do just get in touch if you’d like to help and could come to most of our planning meetings, which are in York on Saturday mornings every month or so.
  • For those on site on Friday night, we are planning a cycling quiz on the Friday night in the main marquee. The bar will also be open :-). We’ll have more details in a future newsletter…
  • A reminder that entries are still open for our next fundraising Sportive, which takes place on the 28th April 2019. All the details are here (also forms for postal entry) or you can enter via British Cycling here. Advance entries are just £25 – on the day (if spaces are left) it’s £30. All funds raised go to support the York Rally! This year we’re also adding a gentler, shorter 50-mile (80 km) “Retro Classic” ride for classic cycle connoisseurs – but it still finds its way to the same fabulous main food stop at Marton. Ride in style! Full Retro details here.

And finally
All are very welcome at our next York Rally planning meeting which is to be held from 10AM on the 26th January 2019 at St Chad’s on the Knavesmire Church Hall, Campleshon Road, York. Please just let us know if you would like a lift from the railway station.

Thanks again for your support of the York Rally – we’re already looking forward to seeing many of you next year!

Merry Christmas and with best regards,

The York Rally Team

New for the York Rally 2019 - a cycling and general knowledge quiz on Friday evening! Book your team's entry now: http://yorkrally.org/quiz/

We've hoping the new quiz will be a convivial way for anyone on site on the Friday evening (21st June) to enjoy spending time with friends on site, take advantage of the catering and bar (both will be open), help us offset the costs of the marquee hire AND have a chance to win prizes!

Teams will have a table each (for up to six players) and as there's finite space in the Lounge marquee numbers are strictly limited. Team entries cost £10 and are open now for online booking - also on the day if there are tables still available.

Many thanks to volunteer quizmaster Pete Dunn who will conduct proceedings with a mix of cycling and general knowledge questions, and may the best answers win! The quiz will start at 7:30 PM.

For all the details, and bookings, see: http://yorkrally.org/quiz/

A new quiz, Rally clothing on sale and much more in our February update!

It’s time for another York Rally update! We’ve plenty of developments to report.

Before we get to that, though, a quick request. We all need to keep pushing awareness of the Rally to keep it flourishing! Word of mouth is the most powerful method there is – so if you know or bump into like-minded people who might want to join us at the Rally weekend, especially camping, do please give us a mention and pass on the website or phone number! You can also download print-it-yourself cards or flyers here. Thanks in advance!

The new Quiz on Friday evening
I covered this in the previous posting here so enough said - except that table bookings are already coming in! Book yours now :-)

Rally clothing – on sale now!

To clear some space for new stock we are having a sale of Rally-branded clothing – with selected items reduced to just over cost price!
  • T-shirt with printed logo: was £11 SALE: now £9.50
  • Polo shirt with embroidered logo: was £14 SALE: now £11.50
  • Hoodie with embroidered logo: was £23 SALE: now £16.50
  • Sweatshirt with embroidered logo: was £17 SALE: now £12.50
Please just head over to the merchandise page for secure online ordering, or contact us for postal ordering.

Just a quick note that York Rally 2019 planning is proceeding well. Please do make sure it's in your diary for the weekend of 22-23 June, and please do book your campsite pitch now!

A few notable items from our recent planning meeting:

  • We're hoping for major improvements to the showers this year. If all goes well they will be relocated inside the enclosure (near the new toilets) where they should be connected to mains electricity, as well as to high capacity mains water and drainage. This should allow us to extend their operating hours and, we expect, massively improve reliability. Many thanks to York Racecourse staff for their very helpful co-operation.
  • Our Yorlk Rally branded clothing sale is still on!
  • Our next meeting - at which all are welcome - is on the 18th May. See here for full details.

Oh, and the 2019 badge is going to look something like this:

Image

Will leave it there for now - please do come along to support your event, and we're looking forward already to meeting everyone there in June!

We always try to ensure there is a good selection of caterers at the York Rally. Typically we have our highly dependable burger (and chips, drinks & more) van, ice cream vendors, coffee vendors, and usually around three or more other outlets. Plus of course the great Brew York bar! But in some recent years we've struggled to book good vegetarian and vegan options - they're much in demand on what is always an event-heavy summer weekend.

So we're delighted that for the 2019 York Rally we have booked Mio Pizza, a local wood-fired pizza specialist whose offerings include a full vegan menu (PDF)!

They'll be open from when gates open on Friday. Please do support all your Rally caterers: a percentage of their takings goes to support the Rally, and keeping them busy means they'll be happy come come back next time, too!

2019 badges, a new band, good news for vegans and much more…

With just a month to go it’s time for another York Rally update! We’ve plenty to get through so please read on for more details on the following:

  1. 2019 badges are now here! Pick yours up at the Rally or order online.
  2. Children’s activities – boosted for 2019 with a treasure hunt and the return of Punch & Judy!
  3. A new band for Saturday night, as long-serving favourites The Foresters have retired…
  4. Good news for vegans – and also for those arriving on Friday…
  5. The Quiz on Friday night – tables are going fast so book now for your team!
  6. Rally round-up – Sportive, thank you to Villages Guides, thank you to Tandem Club, a reminder to bring cycling donations, Audax entries open (also for a new shorter ride), and a new Retro Ride coming up…

1. 2019 badges
2019 badges are here! Thanks to all who helped with the design on Facebook – we’re very happy with the final version, which references the historic Clock Tower which overlooks the Knavesmire. Pick one up at the Rally or order online below…
Order badges now!
Image

2. Children’s activities
We’re boosting the free activities for children at the Rally – on and off the bike. First we have a new Treasure Hunt for secret stones. Then there’s the welcome return of Wildlife Activities from Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and also the return of Punch and Judy. Plus the Grand Parade and opportunities to race – click below to read all the details!
What’s on for kids!

3. A new band
After many years (decades?) of dedicated service at the Rally, we are sad to announce that The Foresters have finally decided to retire. So the live music on Saturday evening will be from a versatile new band with a country music background – please do make them welcome! Rock and roll band The Sonics will also be back on Saturday morning…

4. Catering update
We always try to get a good varierty of catering outlets at the Rally, but it’s often been hard to book vegetarian and vegan options on what is a busy summer weekend. So we’re delighted that for 2019 we have booked Mio Pizza, a local wood-fired pizza specialist. And even better, their offerings include a full vegan menu!

They, and other outlets including the Brew York bar, will be open from when gates open on Friday evening. Please do stay on site to eat if you can – the Rally benefits from a percentage of your spend, and it means we can better attract vendors next year!
Check out the vegan pizza menu (PDF)!

5. The new Friday evening quiz
Tables are booking up for the new cycling and general knowledge quiz on Friday evening! Book your team’s entry now. Teams will have a table each (for up to six players) and as there’s finite space in the Lounge marquee numbers are strictly limited. Team entries cost £10 and are open now for online booking – also on the day if there are tables still available. The quiz will start at 7:30 PM. For all the details, and bookings, see: http://yorkrally.org/quiz/
Book your team’s table now!

6. Rally round-up

  • Thanks to all who ride our recent fundraising Sportive – and to all of the volunteer team who helped make it happen! Read more, and see the pictures, on the Sportive web page.
  • Many thanks to the “Villages Guides to Local Business Services” who have kindly advertised the Rally in their informative publication which is circulated to households across Yorkshire and beyond.
  • Many thanks to The Tandem Club who recently ran an article about the Rally in their club magazine. We’ll look forward to seeing many tandems on the Knavesmire in June!
  • A reminder that our Saddlebag Sale cycle jumble will have a table selling donated items to raise funds for the Rally – please remember to bring anything you can spare!
  • Showers – campers will be happy to hear that for 2019 these will be connected to mains power and drainage, and so we can extend the opening hours: now 6AM to 10 PM. They’ll be located inside the fenced enclosure to make this possible.
  • Rides – we’ll have more details shortly in our next update, but we’ll be running a full schedule of rides from the Rally, as ever. We’re also looking forward to a new Retro Ride – and a note that entries for the 100k Audax are open now, alongside entries for a new 50k Audax ride – both on Saturday morning.

And finally

Please do book anything you can online ahead of the Rally – this really does help reduce the pressure on our volunteers on the day, and helps us plan. So please do book your campsite pitch, saddlebag sale table, quiz team table, and order any badges or clothing in good time – thank you in advance!

All online bookings will close on the Monday (17th June) before the Rally.

Thank you again for your support of the York Rally – we’re already looking forward to seeing many of you in June!

With best regards,
The York Rally Team

Under a month to go until the York Rally 2019! Our campsite team are already busy collating all of the pitch bookings which mentioned a group they'd like to be located with - perhaps a club or just a group of friends.

If you'd like to be located next to others in your group, please make sure you all book by 8th June at the latest - online or by post. You'll be prompted for the group name as part of the booking process.

All the details, and secure online booking, are at:

http://yorkrally.org/visitor-information/campsite-bookings/

All advance bookings also benefit from lower prices than on the day - plus fast-track entry, which we've taken measures to further streamline this year.
