Peace in Europe cycle ride to Berlin 8th May 2020

Postby grandadonanoldbike » 24 Aug 2019, 12:35pm

Peace in Europe cycle ride to Berlin finishing 8th May 2020.
My family and I are in the process of organising a ride, self supported and organised, from London to Berlin to arrive on the 8th May2020.
8th May 2020 is 75th anniversary of V.E. Day more importantly for us it is also 75 years of peace in Europe.
Thought wouldn't it be fantastic if ordinary people from all the capitals of Europe could cycle to Berlin to celebrate 75 years of peace that weekend with a giant peloton to the centre of Berlin.
Does anyone think there is any merit in this idea. If so anyone with ideas how it can be organised. The only bit that needs formal organisation I feel is the Berlin peloton.

I wish I had some concrete suggestions here, but I think it's a nice idea! I love the idea of an international gathering like this.

Please forgive my negativity, but I personally wish we would stop looking back at the World Wars. I am fed-up of the various anniversaries - I had hoped that 2018 might mark the end of the "big ones", but we seem to be rumbling on. Will they continue until 2045? Can we not focus our war thoughts on Nov 11th?

Anyway, I hope there will be more of an emphasis on peace and love in Berlin, and you enjoy yourselves :)

It is important to remember to avoid making the same mistakes
Germany is busy remembering 1989 now, Plus One!
Entertainer, juvenile, curmudgeon
Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott

Great idea - keep us updated - I would consider going. A bike bus back from Berlin might be good too.

Update: I'm pretty much up for this.

PS I always wondered why the YHA HQ was called Trevelyan House. :)

I can imagine the dialogue with the Berlin city fathers:

- How many cyclists?
- Dunno. Thousands?
- And where?
- Dunno. Brandenburger Platz? Or what's that other street, Underlinden?
- Unter den Linden. And why?
- To celebrate you lot getting clobbered in WW2
- Don't let the door hit you, it has a strong spring.
Have we got time for another cuppa?
