carrying a phone in the summer
carrying a phone in the summer
So how do you do it? I need to have an average sized smart phone with me as I need to be on call. But how to carry them in the summer when wearing T shirt and baggy shorts. Phone won't fit into pockets on shorts and would knock against leg anyway if did. T doesn't have pockets and would probably pull out of shape if it did.
Currently I wear a gillet with a map pocket but it can get a bit warm. Don't really like putting phone into luggage where is can get knocked.

Sympathy.
I want my phone with me generally, but T shirt and shorts aren't the best outfit for carrying much at all.
On the bike, I wear a cycling top, and they have back pockets. Failing that, I have a small saddle bag that would hold it.

Si do you mean on your bike? Alpkit's medium or small Fuel Pods could be an idea. Padded, well made and cheap. They update their stock on the bike luggage quickly as it is made in the UK. Sign up to their bike luggage notifying email service to make sure.

If you must wear a T why not get a cycling shirt which looks like a T only with pockets?

Re: carrying a phone in the summer
The phone I use has a 5" screen so is on the large size and can be bulky in pockets so on those occasions when not cycling in clothes with suitable pockets, I use a clip-on holder of the type shown in the pictures below widely available on eBay for under £10.
If your shorts have belt loops and a belt then this is more secure than the clip. Having said that I often cycle in shorts without a belt and the clip on my case is strong enough to hold the phone just clipped over the waist band.
For my 5" phone I use the 'landscape' oriented case as the 'portrait' orientation would catch on the thigh during pedalling which would push the phone upwards and off the waist band

Without my stoker, every trip would only be half a journey

I wear casual/walking shorts a lot with padded undercrackers, mostly Peter Storm/craghoppers and the like as they have zipped side pockets that keep a phone very snug against ones leg but also have a back pocket that you can hardly notice a phone in and certainly don't sit on or clatter when mounting the bike.
I often wear a cycling jersey anyhow as they tend to be more comfortable/breathable than a normal cotton tee so having the 3 pockets for keys/phone and wallet or change works great for me.
Or something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sports-Armban ... 1792075880
I also have a handlebar mounted waterproof case which has a ratchet tighten/release system. You could affix that and just unzip the phone from the plastic case or just slide the whole case off the mount.
Here's a clamp job, not like mine but you get the idea with the case http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WATERPROOF-BI ... 1R1DxeAhvw

I sometimes wear it around my neck, in a see through pouch. Easily accessible and can be on the outside or tucked under shirt.
Re: carrying a phone in the summer
I use one of these http://store.aquapac.net/product/waterproof-phone-case-mini/. Available from a number of suppliers (online and in shops).
Waterproof, wear round my neck under my shirt (i.e. not flopping around), pretty cheap. I can hear all the sounds (e-mails, ringing, etc.) whilst riding. Works in the case (I have a screen protector AND the case and it works fine through both - though not with my gloves (I've not got those "special" e-finger ones). The neck strap avoids the need for fixing or pockets, keeps it out of the way, completely secure (wont bounce out of a handlebar clip thing).
Doesn't swing around whilst riding (I don't even notice it).
Check what size is appropriate for your phone. They do do bike ones that clip to the handle bars but I've just got the normal neck strap one which works brilliantly - been using it for a couple of years now and still going strong.

Never tried one, but the phone arm bands seem popular with joggers.

Either a short sleeved cycling T with back pockets or mini under saddle toolkit holder has room to fit my phone in .

Man bag?
Or in cycling parlance a musette!
I've got quite a nice Carradice one (canvas outside, tweed effect lining, seatbelt shoulder strap) that I was given - but it doesn't seem to correspond directly with anything on their website. It works quite well if I'm pocketed (I don't like riding with stuff in trouser/shorts pockets).

I use this when running and cycling, as I only really need to have it with me for emergencies, the phone is not that accessible when in the pouch, but it fulfils my needs very well.

I've had a look at those and been unsure wondering about how moisture if cycling hard on a hot day. I did see they do a more water resistant model but against body with heat and working hard ...
Is this a problem or do you put your phone in e.g. a ziplock bag ?

This is what my son has got / recently started using. The side pockets can take other 'essentials'; keys, gels etc.
