irc wrote:It works both ways. Last time the SNP made some fantasy economic projections based on the high price of oil amongst other things. Two years on and Scotland had a deficit of 14.9Bn in 2015, per capita twice that of the UK.

Meanwhile in The Herald today George Kerovan, part of an SNP group looking at currency options for an independent Scotland says it would require selling off Scotland's public assets to bankroll it. He also said spending cuts or tax rises would be needed. A bit harder to sell than the utopia promised last time.

As for anecdotes I know yes voters from last time who would switch to no as they think a Brexit UK would be better than a Scotland in the EU.

As with Brexit, economic arguments, and what colour the currency is going to be are no longer 'clever' enough arguments to scare the plucky Scots.

What stone the rUK can use to bash them with next time round (and there WILL be a next time) is beyond my ken.

Hi,
Wish they would hurry up, more than 50% of scots will vote what they want and will not listen to politics, like last time.

Also we can get rid of the SNP telling the UK what to do with all their MP's.

If you think Scotland will be better off...........with their own currency............the Euro..............the EU........I see tears ahead or they will come to their senses, nuclear deterent......we will move it south and the scots can sing..........but its not gonna happen is it...............

P.S. who's bashing who, cam bashed us along with Obama, who is singing a different tune now..........even Kerry is getting all philosophical, I hope Boris puts him straight, US should look to their own financial mesh.......................

I take it from that you don't think it's right people in Scotland are represented by those they elected. Pointless having a democracy eh!

Hi,
Not exactly.

My gripe is that Scotland voted to leave the eu along with the rest of us, my local area voted to stay :?
That's how it was we all knew that.
Now the SNP are saying in the commons Scotland voted to stay :? Scotland is not independent Yet :!: Nor is my sunny field in Devon.

Democracy is that we were all in it together.
Let the SNP put there efforts into an independent Scotland, if that's what Scotland want, But the elephant in the room is what currency, they cant share that and stay EU and be independent.

The fear of Scotland leaving was what currency.............not the Euro for sure, Scotland will have to vote to leave and put up a currency.

We all know by madness that SNP over represent the numbers in the commons................

I have nothing against scots, do you think that the outcome will be different if they go ref again :?:

You do say some strange things....as well as believing some strange things.
The SNP are indeed saying that Scotland voted to remain......and they are perfectly right as Scotland did vote to stay by 62%. Now if you believe that Devon or even your"sunny field"makes some sort of an equivalence here then better think again. Scotland, whether you like it or not is a Nation...and one which entered into a union with England on equal terms. If "Democracy" by your definition means that all of the Scottish MPs barring one voted to remain in the EU and this can be disregarded, then Democracy means nothing at all.
Scotland is quite capable of creating its own currency thank you, if tiny countries all over the world manage to do this then I think we will manage.

As for this strange remark "We all know by madness that SNP over represent the numbers in the commons
I'm not sure what you can mean. If you mean that the number of SNP MPs are an over-representation of the votes cast for the SNP....then reflect for a moment upon the fact that this Tory Government was elected with 32% of the vote....and God help us just look what happened.

It's an SNP MP saying Scottish public assets would be required to finance a currency and that the deficit would need tax rises or spending cuts. It isn't bashing it's stating facts.

It's scare mongering, which just won't work the second time around. Like the Brexiters, they'll vote with their hearts this time. A little short term economic grief is no price to pay for total autonomy, back in the EU and well rid of a plus en plus right wing Westminster grasping hand politics.

That's the second time you've used your 'Sporran' joke. I think once was more than enough. My wife's Scottish and she's had it up to 'here' with Jock, Porridge head (and it's derivative) and the rest of the anti Scottish sentiment that floats about as 'jolly wheeze'. It's an insult, well used at the last referendum 'what will the jocks use for bawbees in their sporran now? '. Racial stereotyping, which in these times we live in, no once tolerates. The Scots aren't living in caves with wode and tartan ear muffs.

They invented television, the bicycle you ride, the pneumatic tyre that keeps your teeth in, and the very roads, TarMacAdam you cycle on. There's a lot to be thankful for. Respect is something that those south of the border seem to have forgotten about.

Wonder Woman? That's straight out the Daily Maul.

It's not 'funny'. Highland dress is a purely ceremonial attire. It's worn maybe once a year, by the few Scots who posses it. They use a sporran for everything else except money.

So 'contents of one's sporran is completely spurious and not that far away from any other race insult, I don't expect to see it in these forums again. And the English wonder why they are not well liked by the Scots...

Oh, and 70% of the poll think they SHOULD have a referendum. I assume your 'friends in the North' are English ex pats? If not then why not call them by their proper name : Scots?

I worked in Surrey for 6 years and I had to put up with this kind of racial garbage/banter everyday. I'm Scottish and I'm offended.

How anyone thinks they can get away with this in the times we live in... I also did a tour of N.Ireland with an English regiment and they were equally insulting and disrespectful of the Irish. They did it to one end, to antagonise and stir up hatred.

It seems a problem for the English.

As for the Indyref I look forward to the same look of sick shock on 50 million English faces the day the Yes vote comes in. Same one i saw three weeks ago.

And I look forward to seeing those nuclear submarine sail down the Clyde to an unknown harbour down south. To think £40bn is bad for trident? Try 450bn and ten years to build a new base for the sub's. And that's if you can find anywhere deep enough to protect them. And none actually exists, the nearest is France.

Who, since we are no longer neighbours I don't y think will be too happy to accommodate.

+1 The English do seem to have an inordinate amount of racial insults to hurl at the Scottish, (much like the Eskimos have for snow) but my wife is currently racking her brains to think of similar Scots /English. Perhaps the Scots are more circumspect about who they insult?

Mind you, the Scots have their own language, Theatre, dictionary, law system, newspaper style, parliament and cinema. Some of that difference is explained here:

I make frequent visits to Scotland in the company of a group of Scots, cycling, walking and climbing. Being the only Englishman I get subjected to quite a bit of banter. I try to give as good as I get. The term I used for the first minister is the term all my Scottish friends use, I dont read the Daily Mirror. To a man and woman they dislike nationalism and think Independence would be an economic, political and personal disaster. I am sorry if my banter upset you and apologise to any I offended.

Hi,
in the poll I voted YES, but out on eu ref, scotlands own choice, it may be well timed..................

I have no axe to grind with scots at all.
Some of the remarks are just banta which nowadays is taken as racist etc.
It just handbags :)

I wonder what the scot ref will actually bring and what conditions Nicky will push for before the date will be set.......................not knocking just curious on the conditions.

Cam and Albama no more worried / bashed / what ever me than cam did the scots I.M.O.
What some call scare etc, does not wash with mature sensible people, BUT can affect the undecided / inexperienced younger electorate, so there should be a power to stamp out pure scaremongering which is so damaging to politics.
