Apple Mac spelling
Apple Mac spelling
Mac question here.
We have three Macs and an iPad, we've had Macs for nearly 15years. Until we upgraded to Yosemite OS X 10.10, we could disable US spelling. It seems we no longer can.
We've been 10.10 for ages now, and this spelling malarky is getting right up my nose. I'm not a good speller, so often need to check the word (Cntrl/Click). Often as not, the US spelling comes up. I'm getting the User Dictionary to recognise the British English spellings, but the US spellings are still an alternative.
This is in Mail, Pages, Numbers, Text Edit, Safari ................ in fact anything you want to use.
Yes, I can turn spelling completely off, but that doesn't help me spell correctly.
In the good old days, you could disable various spellings and put the spelling priorities in order, now, you can't. You can select British English and have US English deleted ................... but US English is still there.
I've scoured the internet and the various Mac forums, but not found an answer.
Can anyone help?
No doubt Apple couldn't care less.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the options list, second from bottom is Cornish English........

Re: Apple Mac spelling
I'm on 10.11. I have 'English' selected as the only language in the list, and 'United Kingdom' as the region. I haven't manually added "English (U.K.)". But that seems to be enough: it doesn't suggest US English words, and if I type "civilisation civilization" and ask for a spell check, it flags the latter as incorrect.
(That said, I don't usually use the spell-check, but your post made me curious to investigate!)

civilization civilisation
As you can see, it objects to civilisation, but not civilization.
So why does yours work, and mine doesn't?

Just come back in on another computer.
iMac running 10.10.5 Yosemite.
civilisation civilization Good grief!
It works!
Looks like the problem is mine.
Now, I need to look at what the differences are. Back later this evening.
Thanks guys, just putting all this on "paper" has made me see things clearly.

Neither -ize nor -ise is particularly US or UK. The Z-form used to be the norm until Dr. Johnson decided that all such words came via French and so should be spelt in the French manner. He was wrong, but he managed to muddy the water before anyone realized it.
(My wife was a translator whose clients (French) were continually complaining that she had translated into American rather than English English because she'd used -ize, so the issue was a frequent one here.)
Have we got time for another cuppa?

Re: Apple Mac spelling
When I was at school (in England!) - long time ago - "ize" was quite acceptable and seemed to be the norm. Sometime later it seems there was a preference for "ise" but both are acceptable in English English ie not Foreign English!Audax67 wrote:Mick F wrote:civilization civilisation

I've no experience of your system but I'd go to
Settings
In search box put 'auto capital'
I'm pretty sure something will come up?

In what way is it better than previous releases ?
Certainly more bugs in bluetooth drivers. Seems to crash more often. But otherwise no much changed. (Oh except you can not adjust the display size of Notes app text to either too small or too large - better than just having "too small").
