Replacement pedals needed - advice please

Post by boxerman »

Hello one and all - new to CTC - just joined!

I have a one year old Bergamont recreational all terrain bike. I stood on one of the pedals recently and managed to break the plastic foot platform, so as a stop gap measure, I put my rat traps on from my Trek hybrid. Problem is, I'm restricted to trainers only, as the straps on the rat traps are a small loop, and I'm size 12 feet!

Can someone recommend a stout, reliable pedal I can fit that won't break the bank please? The bike is for recreational local riding, shopping & etc so I don't want to fit pedals that necessitate specialised footwear etc.

Thanks in advance

I would start by looking at the MKS Sylvan Touring Pedal.
Nice wide, robust, serviceable and reliable, they take toeclips.

I was very happy with mine until I went over to SPD's. Which makes me think you should find cheap secondhand ones in good condition that were also only ditched to move on to SPDs.

Wellgo LU868s if you can find them - sturdy rubber blocks moulded onto a metal frame. Union SP-808s are similar but more plastic. Vavert Commuter/Leisure are similar but don't seem as hardwearing. Raleigh Leisure pedals are most widely available but fairly ugly IMO and quite plasticky again. I've used all and they're all basically good but I prefer the Wellgo ones.

If you like more mountain-bike-style pegged pedals instead of rubber, the DMR V8s get praised - but I've not tried them I'm clumsy and suspect I would smack myself on the pegs too often.

If you want huge platforms, the MKS Lambdas get good praise, but not for their looks.

I rate mks sylvan touring pedals and have them on my tourer, but i don't think they'd be good wearing trainers as there's no support in the middle between the outer plates so they still need stiff soles.

When he rode, my 6'3" tall, size 12 trainers, son's pedals of choice were "DMR V8s" or similar.

This is almost identical to the Nano fit £16.50 delivered. Use them myself, bombproof AND lightweight.

Hey, thanks everyone!

Very grateful for the plethora of good advice.

Glad to be part of the clan at long last (I was waiting for the senior membership rate!)

I am suspicious that the bearings in those 'low profile pedals' are plain bushings of some kind. Often there is a tiny cartridge bearing (that isn't really strong enough) in one end of the pedal and the main loads are borne by the plain bushing. I think ball bearings are a better idea in pedals.

Lots of good pedals here

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/pedals-flat-916-axle/

including

- MKS urban platform
- MKS Lambda
- MKS Esprit
- Wellgo LU987U ( a DMR V8-alike)

cheers

I like these too. You can completely strip, regrease and rebuild them if you like, although (as advised by Brucey) you could just keep up to date, using the grease nipple/grommet/doobree/thingy/technical word.

....and a bushing. The cartridge bearings sit side by side in the outboard position IIRC which means that they have a fighting chance of lasting more than five minutes (unlike pedals with a single bearing at this location). However that still leaves about half of the load on the pedal supported by a bushing. The Nano-X and Nano rebuild kits look like this

The available data (from the manufacturers of such bushings) suggests that such bushings (depending on the construction) will have between x10 and x100 more friction under load vs a good quality ball bearing.

The LU868s and SP-808s both have loose ball bearings both ends. I've serviced both, using commodity balls from the local bike shop.

yup, they are pretty standard, bearing-wise. Lots of pedals (including the V8-alikes I linked to) use similar bearings and they can last well. However the sealing isn't perfect so some maintenance is a good idea if the bike is used in all weathers. If all you do is squirt some decent lube (eg aerosol semi-fluid grease) into the inboard bearing from time to time, that can be enough.
