The flaming red alert box!
The flaming red alert box!
"If the HTTPS site does work for you, you can dismiss this announcement by hovering over the top right-hand corner and clicking the cross that appears" - but don't worry, it'll be back again on your next visit. Could someone make it so clicking the cross gets rid of it unless we visit the insecure version, or some such, please?

Ooooh, here's another fun thing: if you have lots of tabs open, one per unread topic, and click the X on the red alert in one window, then when you click X on the red alert in another window, it'll display the wrong topic. Probably not worth fixing, but confusing.

Just change to the https: site and update your bookmarks? The days are coming when we'll use http: by default anyway.

Why the change to a secure link ? Monetising the forum in some way or data mining for fun and profit ?
Re: The flaming red alert box!
i get the tappatalk offer every time i access the site. it directs me to the app store which then says its not compatible with my device. so i then go back to the ctc site and i cant access the https site either as my ipod is not capable of accessing it, BTW my Ipod is fully up to date with IOS 6 the latest version it will accept. Its getting to the point where they expect you to buy the latest offering as soon as they launch it. I would rather spend my money on something bike related rather than the latest phone

I have changed and updated the bookmarks. The red box still reappears occasionally.

Unable to replicate that issue. Firefox 51.0 on Win10.

Updated bookmarks. Red box appearing every new browser session. No big deal.

Re: The flaming red alert box!
I'm generally frightened by the unknown, and as most computer stuff is a mystery to me, I'm wary of clicking on anything unusual without a trusted explanation. Previously, just about every change on here has been accompanied by an explanatory announcement. Is an official explanation in a thread possible here? (Then I can come out from hiding under the eiderdown.
Re: The flaming red alert box!
Just block it. I saw it, tried it, used it (https:) a few times and killed of the box and have not seen it since (using my computer NOT any close boxes or anything). Didn't use any little "X" in any boxes - just blocked it as an unwanted element to the page.

Not an official explanation, but: using https essentially means your login details (among everything else) are encrypted. Which means that they can't be easily stolen by someone else on the same network. You shouldn't notice any difference other than a green lock next to the URL in your browser.
FWIW the box keeps coming back for me even after updating the bookmark (Chrome on Android).

I just used
Which I assume will block all announcements - so I'll probably remove it after everybody is happy with the change and that announcement removed. Of course it depends on how you block out things you don't want on your computer but the above should be pretty good for browser based blockers compatible with Adblock/uBlock/Adblock+/etc.

Yes, but the point here is to put the whole site under https: Sign-ins have always happened under https:
The problem with only doing sign-ins like that is that your session cookies and so on are exchanged unencrypted after you've signed in. That opens up a small-ish risk of compromise. Sites used to minimise use of https: because all the en/decryption slows things down, but with faster machines now it's not an issue.
So, sites are increasingly using https: throughout.

Yeah, sorry. 'Twas what I meant but perhaps I ended up confusing matters rather than simplifying them
