Continental Sport Contact tyres

Continental Sport Contact tyres

I was in Evans and looking around and saw on a few bikees these Continental Sport Contact tyres - quite fat and tall and slick I suppose seemed quite nice. Thought might be a nice fast alernative to my Marathons? Any one any experience of them?

Evans dont stock them by SJS does in 26"/559

much faster than marathons, with less puncture protection too. Tend to cut up on the rear a bit quickly this time of year.

Also the file pattern soon wears off (esp rear tyre), leaving you with more of a slick.

cheers

On sale at CRC for £16.99 at the moment.

There are better tyres on sale there at the moment though.

Not sure what you are looking to use them for - best go look yourself

Maybe the Vittoria Randonneur II or Schwalbe Durano ?

I find fitting continental tyres is a frustrating experience. Like none other.

I have them on a Croix de Fer disc bike. They are light and grip well. Tread pattern is almost slick and is fine on tarmac or even tracks. Reminiscent of Panaracer Paselas.

I had them on my dawes discovery for a while, when i had it and used it as a winter hack. I'll be honest I got a lot of punctures with those tyres and ended up going back to Marathon Plus's which stopped the punctures altogether. Didn't notice any significant speed difference using 28's along paths and roads.

I've had Conti Contact 406s ("Comfort" and "City") on my TSR, and they were absolute total beasts on and off, destroying several pretty serious tyre levers (like the chunky Bontrager ones, and bending a plastic coated steel SJS one and some Parks). When one was needing replaced last year I actually resorted to cutting the bead with pliers to get it over the rim. Utter [rude word removed] things. Replaced by a Durano, which was one hell of a lot easier to work with.

Pete.

BTW in 622 (700C) these tyres didn't seem a terribly tight fit; not as bad as gatorskins, for example. I suspect that the 406 tyres being tight may be a size (or batch) -specific problem.

Also I recently inspected a set of 37x622 that had done 3000 miles (all weather, touring and commuting). The rear was worn slick (maybe 1mm of rubber worn away?) and was somewhat cut up as expected (not bad though). It had suffered two punctures in its life, both from flints (which are the usual culprits hereabouts). The front was unmarked.

Obviously a smaller wheel with the same tyre on would see a higher wear rate than this.

Personally I think that if they suit you, and you can buy these tyres for about £16 each, that would be a very good price.

cheers
