The point of carrying daily luggage and dropping it off at b&b's is not an issue .... Just use common sense when booking.
(the problem with common sense is .. it's not very common ).
We will go firm with campsites nearer June 2017 and B&b's close to the campsites can be booked by those using them ....
It all comes down to deposits paid i'm afraid ... when we have the commitment of cash we can plan in greater depth ....
PS. Who else is from Rotherham ?

I'm in Wath 2-3 times a week .... my daughter lives there. I cycle the Derne valley route every Saturday morning before picking the grandkids up. Wath - Bolton - Darfield - Wombwell - Barnsley and back ... gives me a pleasant 20 mile ride.

An alternative I've used for group activities is a pre paid debit card, cheap to run but not free, easy for everyone to pay into and can be used like any other debit card. There's a few to choose from.

This might be more pertinent to club rather than a group of friends , but if it were me I'd also make sure I stayed clear of ABTA package holiday regulations in case something went wrong. It's simple to do, just separating travel/activity/accommodation and offering each individually stops it being a package.

Yebbut - whichever way a person has to take responsibility, be it Paypal, prepaid debit or whatever - two of the proposed party seem to have already abdicated responsibility for finances..
For our club's overseas tours (HoECC) we have had a cash kitty in the past (the brown purse) It worked - but with Euro 000s going through it over the course of a couple of weeks for about 12 people it got a bit clumsy with the amount of cash so we've now got an "electronic brown purse" in the form of a "spare" bank account that I had ... transfers in and out as well as a debit card for during the trip group expenses like coffees, food and beers.
There is of course a difference in that we all know each other very well having been friends for years, meeting almost every Wednesday.

Thanks for your thoughts Rob. ..... The 2 who have "abdicated" responsibility for finance are the 2 who are organising the transport, the camping the finding of sites, route, etc.
It's a shared endeavour, so lets share it
Talking of endeavours, how's your new national cycle touring club getting on, ..... ?
