the best outside bike storage

Post by ianrobo »

Mrs has finally told me my main commuter bike can not be kept indoors anymore. Keeping in the shed is not an option to get it out at 5AM so need a secure outside bike box for a reasonable price.

Searched around a few out there but anyone with personal experience of one and especially if someone has tried to break in ?

Put her in the shed and keep the bike indoors, security problem sorted but creates a marital problem.

My outside storage consists of just a water proof sheet (ground sheet from an old tent IIRC) pinned to the wall under window (so the windowsill stops the wet running down the back of it). The bike is then attached to the wall via wall anchor, chain and lock from pragmasis http://securityforbikes.com/security-chains.php .

These are as expensive as many of these bike sized sheds, but are very secure. If you are worried about losing the wheels then I guess you can U lock them to the frame. The other thing you might consider is getting an old wreck of a bike and lock it to your bike using a cheese wire lock. They'll then break the easy lock and take the sacrificial bike, leaving your pride and joy behind.

I've had someone try to steal my bike while locked thus and they gave up. We've also used one at work and never had a bike pinched.

Stayed in a B&B over the summer, and they had a very secure metal 'shed' designed to stop all but the most determined thief without an angle grinder. No idea on price, but easy to access, room for several bikes, and totally weather proof
