BC Marshalls

Post by tim-b »

Hi
A few years ago BC Marshalls were piloting a scheme under which they had legally enforceable signs during cycle races to stop traffic
Has this come into general use/law now?
(My search skills seem to have deserted me, so apologies if it's well documented somewhere)
Regards

IT is dependent on the local constabulary. Some counties police force have adopted the scheme and others have not, yet.

Marshals do a half day course and are then accredited, after you have done 5 races. You then have the legal power to stop traffic. You need to agree to marshal 5 races each year to keep your accreditation.

Locally, I think Leics have adopted the scheme and I think Notts have too.

I thought the only people with the power to stop traffic in highways were police officers. Though I suppose we already have school crossing people. This must be similar. Stopping traffic for a few moments.

(Edit. Having read the article, making the marshalls look and act like people manning a school crossing is a good idea. We are all conditioned to stop for people with lollipop signs and expect the delay to be minimal.)

I an a BC Marshal and have been for the last 2 years. We have the power to stop traffic using a lollipop sign with an image of a bike on it. If any vehicle fails to stop then they can be reported to the police for failure to stop as the lollipop sign is the equivalent of a red light. They could be prosecuted and receive points on their licence.

Do you have the same legal status as a school crossing patrol?

Essex, Suffolk, and Norfolk, are using it. It's part of the Community Safety Accreditation scheme. So, as above, each police force can implement it or not, as they wish.

I was an accredited marshal, in the pilot.

Hi
Thanks all. I had read the BC articles but wasn't sure how far beyond the pilot the scheme had got, and the Highway Code doesn't seem to acknowledge it (online gov.uk search, rather than reading cover to virtual cover)
