Re: School trying to make helmets compulsory
Already a thing at Glyn school in Surrey since at least April, this was on their newsletter from April.
It would seem that a Mr.Batchelor who was the deputy head at Glyn school has taken this vile disease to Banstead school where he is now headmaster
They are connected in that they are part of GLF schools umbrella.

Head's Twitter photo shows him helmeted and clad in team sky top....
Unfortunately the all the gear no idea mamil folk are often more moronic about things like this than the most dedicated petrolhead. They really really don't get the concept that cycling can be an everyday method of getting from a to b not an extreme sport that requires fancy kit.

What I find worrying about all this is that in effect we have regulations being introduced by those with no real knowledge (or with a strong personal opinion) - no sensible review about the impacts of effects. In effect it is becoming legislation by the back-door with punishment for transgressors. And some of the punishments are severe (driver gets points & fine for speeding, child cyclist gets their transport confiscated for failure to wear a helmet - no balance or proportionality or accountability to the punishments).

The OP hasn't posted for a while. I wonder how thongs went on? We could always send a spokesperson to grind down the opposition till they are begging to be excused.

I always did too until I tried one - it's really quite easy.

I feel a "Grink" coming on
I am a keen cyclist and fully aware of the requirements to cycle safely
My son / daughter has now been instructed to have a "numberplate" mounted underneath the saddle.
This is at present where the rear light is placed.
Could you please clarify on the fitting alternatives as the present system will mask the light and in doing so endanger my child
Re: School trying to make helmets compulsory
Given that:
“The system will allow us to target cycle training and safety awareness sessions to our students, to reward good and safe cycling by giving members of the community a way to give us feedback about how our students are using the roads locally. As well as helping us to discuss with students any occasions where their cycling may not meet our expectations."
I would be very interesting given the inherent problems with parents driving to school, illegal parking and obstruction, is the school making full use of the car number plate system:

This is surely a joke?
How can anyone dictate these things if they aren't law?
I can tell you now, that if we lived in Surrey and had children going to that school, we would ride with them and get off 50yds before and then walk in.
Also I would get the local MP involved.

Re: School trying to make helmets compulsory
It's a shame that the anti-wheel-clamping law only applies to motor vehicles - as usual cars are deemed 'special'. Someone in my position - both parents working - would have difficulty retrieving a bike. I hope there's due process so that a child can defend themselves if, for instance, a bullying victim has the number plate maliciously removed from his/her bike.
My first few years at secondary school I cycled to a friend's house across the road from school and we walked the last 100 yds together, my bike in their garage. My school didn’t have petty anti-cycling rules, but this worked for me, and would be a potential solution (space in garage for hire?)
Perhaps someone should send this head-teacher a link to the Cycling UK comment (https://www.cyclinguk.org/article/campa ... g-policies).

There's law and there's Law.
For cycle training, for example, the Buck Stops at Local Authorities who can justify pretty much anything they want on the basis of risk assessments. LAs in turn point out that schools have effectively the same position themselves, and it's very difficult imposing anything much on a head teacher as long as the curriculum is being taught.

Re: School trying to make helmets compulsory
Could Cycling UK arrange a one day conference to discuss all aspects of children cycling and helmet requirements and the evidence behind their position paper on helmets? Schools could be given a discount price for attending.
