There are lots of mallards and moorhens, some goosanders and tufted ducks, a couple of cormorants at this time of year, a heron, and a resident pair of swans that successfully bring up 5-6 cygnets each year. Today however was special as I saw a kingfisher - only the second time I've seen one in the last three years. Its iridescent colours were just lovely and really stood out in the wet and windy weather.

I occasionally see one zooming along the middle of the L&L canal near us,and once saw one sat on a branch on the opposite side of one of the brooks on Pennington Flash nature reserve close by.
The local keen birders tell me there's three pairs breeding on the reserve or near to it.

When I was a boy the whole area was pit slag heaps and the canal and local brooks and streams were very polluted, now it's wildlife haven,my latest joy was last summer a small stream/river that feeds into the Flash which wasn't much short of an open sewer when I was a boy I saw teaming with fish, the whole area has seen quite a transformation in 50 odd years :D

Missed my train by one minute, had to wait 59 minutes for the next
Used the time for a good look at the bikes parked outside, much more variety than one sees in the LBS

When I visit a church or museum or exhibition I like to read the visitors book to see what others thought of the place

This often helps me to get more out of my visit

Nearly all the Sheffield stands at the station are occupied
The underground car park is half empty, there are plans to convert it into a bike station, +1
Expect it to take a few years mind

Stopped today by a retired local shopkeeper to recount a recent car-borne encounter with a large cycling event - "everyone of the oncoming cyclists we pulled in to let past on the narrow lanes thanked us" :D (I was fearing the worst when he started recounting this   )

It is earnestly to be hoped that they communicated by nodding while keeping both hands on the bars

Got up early to go cycling
Hope there won't be many other cyclists about :)

Went by the primary school at break time, the little angels were screaming and shouting, throwing snowballs and trying to build snowpersons, +1!

From my library:
Youth Hostel Story, Oliver Coburn, 1950
..

"In 1931 the Reckitt Trust made a grant of GBP 100 towards the establishment of hostels in the North
The Cyclists' Touring Club presented the hostels with a hundred pounds worth of mirrors"

Soon the YHA became known as *Your Husband Assured* because the hostels were full of well-groomed young people, +1!

Beautiful new moon at dawn on the way in this morning, with (I think) Venus close by.

Rather icier than anticipated however which resulted in me coming off at low speed, performing a beautiful pirouette with one foot on the ground and gently coming to a stop just as another cyclist came the other way. No injuries to self or machine.

Home on the gritted main road tonight methinks.

Not sure that I was well groomed but my wife made use of this I'm pleased to say.

The sun was bright and very low when I was walking through town, it was hard to see where I was going
Fortunately I cycled home in the dark

Been using a digital camera nearly nine years

It is great, I can store a thousand *images* on a tiny card and take them everywhere with me

Photography was fun back then even with rolls of 36 pictures but I still have boxes of prints

It is much better now, +36
