Ageing is a cruel process. Two and a half years ago I went to the doctor to tell him that my hearing was deteriorating - all sorts of symptoms but one easy to describe is that I can hardly hear the bleep which goes with the green man on a pelican crossing. Doc referred me to a specialist but no appointment forthcoming. I have other, more serious problems (angina and more) so I never pushed the hearing referral although the doc did say it was a long waiting list.
Finally decided to go back the other day to see what was going on. Doc would not believe me that it was two and a half years ago. When he checked it was 10 Jan 2006 and I was right. So, I am waiting for new glasses, I may eventually get a hearing test but, hooray, my memory is alright, if only I could remember what started me off going on about this

Its a good advert for urban based riders to get a mountain bike. With the thick 2" knobbly tyres and thick rims they can handle most pot holes. I've found with my Italian racer with its 23mm tyres you only need a thin crack or wet manhole cover to throw you off. Also hidden potholes can be a nuisance ie ones that have been filled but the tarmac has sunk due to the backfill not being compsacted properly. See helmet cams have made the news today. Its a sad state of affairs.
I'm lounging on the settee. I have most my hearing and most of my sight. Bifocals help with the sight! Shouting louder also helps.
I know I can't get off the settee without help. My left thigh has gone on strike!

We were talking about "Positives" earlier:
I'm still alive.
Only superficial injuries.
Bike not too badly damaged.
Tarmac was smooth, and not gravel dressed.
Policeman came by minutes after my crash.
Mrs Mick F is on School Holls, so she can look after me.
I'm fit and strong.
Crash happened only 6 miles from home.
We go off on on holls on the 17th. - time to recover.
Frame can be dropped off at Mercian on our way north for a check-up.
Every cloud has a silver lining.

I remember getting avery similar graze on my thigh coming off my bike some years ago.
You have my sympathy 100% Mick. As I remember my dressing gown was the only thing I could wear without it rubbing and causing agony.
Hope the holiday does the trick & Bike is OK.

P.S. at a similar time I managed to develop a mild kidney infection - the doctor said one of the best courses of treatment was drinking beer as it flushed through the kidneys so quickly! I'm still looking for better excuses!

I'm much better, folks. I had my dressings changed on Sunday morning for some high-tech stuff that almost reminds me of puncture outfit patches! Sort of brown and thick that sticks completely over the wounds and seals them in.
It also "sucks" out the infections and fluids, and dribbles a bit too! With a bit of luck, I shouldn't need any more attention until tomorrow (Wednesday).
Right elbow and left hand are fine now, also right bum-cheek. Left thigh is very sore still, and left elbow too. My biggest problem is that my left thigh muscles are very sore and achey, and I can't lift my leg too well. It's feeling better today. (Front thigh muscle is a quad?)
Last night was the first night so far that I could describe as a good night's sleep. Instead of having to lie on my tummy, I could turn onto my right side and also my back!
I'll be phoning CTC Accident Claims Advice line today. Yesterday, I tried to find out the policeman's name and number. As he wasn't called out, no incident report was filed, so it might take a bit of work to get the info. He's my best witness, should one be required. I won't contact highways until I have advice and as many facts as I can.
The bike damage isn't much compared to my body damage, and the upset that the accident has caused me is trauma in more ways than one!
