Balls!

Post by Cunobelin »

Saw this outside a local bike shop, a heavily modified Optima Rhino.

Any ideas what the balls are for?

It's only my guess but I suspect they're to support the rear end when the back wheel is removed for p*n*t*re repairs. If so, he/she isn't a very weight conscious person, there must 16/20" of studding doing nothing :!:

B*****ks! The owner needs to see someone urgently!

Or is this yours Cunobelin and you're trying to pass it off as somebody else's?

When I went down to ICE to get my upgrade Neil was telling me that he had a play one day with a currie motor like the one on that trike. Rather than put it there like it's designed to he put it on the chain so that it went through the rear gears. He was doing 30mph on the flat and it was still pulling to go faster.

All sorts of things come to mind. What is that rusty looking container underneath the sandwich box at the back?

Is the electric motor needed to carry all the extra equipment?

Why get a nice looking machine like that and festoon it with what appears to the layman as junk?

And the balls? I suggest the owner is a drummer in a very heavy metal band

I reckon he screws them down to lift the rear wheel off for testing and tuning purposes. Perhaps his electrical system is still in the experimental stage.

Something to protect motor and derailleur from "kerbing" perhaps?
But why leave the top end so long? Must be getting close to a thump in the back when the suspension bottoms!

I she using the motor as a generator? Lowering the balls to raise the wheel off the groud and then pedalling to generate power for whatever lies within gthe mysterious yellow box. Otherwise it would give a helluva shock as a Van de Graff generator/theft detterent.
First stage of development for the holy grail of generating sufficient power to run a GPS mapping unit with a screen large enough to see?

The more I look at this the more it looks like an anti grounding device. While it is adjustable it is not easily adjustable. Landing on the motor would be bad news. and maybe the pair makes a wheel change easier too.

It would be nice to ask the owner though!

Forgive some deception by letting this carry on for a while!

Cranky got this bang on and almost immediately. It is an incorporated stand for maintenance and fettling (including p*nct*res)

Still like my idea of an undercover dalek!

I hear it screaming now, "Overtake, OVERTAKE!!!!!!" (okay, it needs a little imagination! :D )
