Could well have been. We have loads of them hereabouts.

I thought it could have been fox, but deer seems more likely. I wonder why we've not seen any deer poo in the garden before as we've been living here for over 20 years and see loads of deer.

We dont have much formal garden, just loads of grass. The deer visit close to the house depending on what is 'in season'. They often strip our pear tree, but generally leave the apples, cookers and eaters. Next door lose their roses when they're 'sweet'. So I guess even though there are lots around you, it's either too noisy around your house [emoji6] or just nothing on the menu they fancy.

Maybe the deer have got used to you after 20 years

I would turn the specimens over with a stick and try to break them, maybe some undigested material could be identified

Very important - how big are they?

Length is about four or five inches.

Fox is more likely than deer. We see loads of deer, but not many foxes.

Yes definitely, deer droppings are more like rabbit or sheep. Otter scats can have that black twisted appearance but sometimes smell fishiy. I have heard the smell of otter scats being described as 'jasmine tea' - which puts me off the idea of jasmine tea...
