Can not remove inflated tyre pads stopping wheel dropping out.

Hi all

Just changed some pads and when I tried to install the wheel (with inflated tyre) I couldn't as pads were hitting frame and not giving enough clearance see picture attached. Only way I could do was to deflate it ....install it and then pump it up. Is this normal or have I done something wrong ? Guess in the past I have mostly replace wheel when the tyre was flat.

However just to add to the pot when changing the pad I noticed the pad holders (maked left and right) were on the wrong side so I changed them, Not sure if that would have an effect.

Would appreciate and comments or advice.

that is (for a brake on the front of the fork, rather than on the back, and those brake blocks) quite 'normal' on some bikes.

If the brake pads were the wrong way round before, they might have cleared the fork blades better but this arrangement isn't safe with insert type holders. You can mount one-piece brake blocks the wrong way round if you want to, but not the holder type.

The pad in the picture is on the front right fork....

I did wonder whether they where fitted the wrong way around to give slightly more clearance but I was worried as these pads slide into the holders so the only point holding them in would be the pin (which goes through) and could be forced out when I braked !

The frame is a Reynolds 525 double butted

That photo looks like the front of the right hand front fork leg,so the holders and pads are fitted correctly.
The problem the OP has encountered isn't unusual with some narrow fork crowns and wider tyres.

Hi,
Cut a piece of this Damproof membrane about 10" long.
Wrap it over the tyre and place onto bike, then (important) push DPM up past pads but not the tyre, so there is a gap between the top of tyre and wrapped DPM, shove tyre past pads, wiggle wheel back and forth helps a bit, not so easy on the ground as a bike stand but, just carefully push bike down with wheel on the road.

The tyre should slip on the DPM not - the DPM slide on the pads, that's the reason for the slack so you don't damage pads.

To remove wheel from frame do the same, carry a bit in tool kit.
As you said you can deflate tyre, I usually partially inflate then finish on bike, if I remember

And the bit left over makes your mud flaps.
Actually this is nothing new and I wonder if its more noticeable due to the current trend to use wider tyres. I bet it would work with 23mm ones.

FWIW in some cases it is the work of a few moments to remove one brake arm or one brake block, and get the wheel in that way.

Another approach that works in some (but not all) instances is to use a holder meant for a shorter 'road' type brake insert (~55mm) instead. Being shorter the whole brake block clears the fork better. Some holders have a swivel built into the base (currently 105 and higher in shimano, amongst others) and accept a bolt. These holders can be fitted with spacers and mounted to a V brake. A similar arrangement is used in BR-CX70 brakes etc.
