Wheel Recommendation

I am interested in changing my rear wheel on Trek 830 MTB, currently Araya 26" x 150HE VP20 with Marathon Plus 26" x 1.50" tyres.

Any recommendations - not too expensive but decent quality.

Rim choice is getting limited in 26" now for non-disc. VP20 is a pretty terrible bendy rim (I had some BITD).
Have a look a Spa cycles, their wheels have a very good reputation.

Thanks. I have had wheels from SPA before, which were good but just wondered about off-the-shelf this time. Also meant to say 36 spoke, rim width 25mm & for a x7 speed cassette.

Have you looked at Rose in Germany?
They have a wheel building scheme on their website,choose your hubs,spokes and rims.
I got a pair for my S in L for commuting,I've only needed to tweak the rear once in two years.
They were a great price and delivered in about a week IIRC.

Merlin Cycles offer a rear wheel with a Deore hub on a Mach 1 MX rim for a bargain £59.99 - nothing fancy but definitely an upgrade on your old one, for the hub at least.

if the hub is in good shape, I'd suggest getting a sputnik rim built onto it. Job done.

You will find it difficult to get a 7s hub otherwise and an 8s hub with a spacer on the freehub body just seems all wrong to me.

Thanks but it is a very old (+25yrs) wheel with extensive use and though working fine is a little buckled (approx 1- 2mm) + rims very worn.

Are Taylors wheels any good, they look promising?#

er, the knackered rim has very little to do with the state of the hub.....

Taylor wheels are not very expensive. Like most not very expensive wheels they are not built as well as they could be.
