Thanks Fraz, looks like numbness is an Achilles symptom then.

Thanks for the suggestion John. I am seeing my GP tomorrow, I will ask if there is one in my area.

Eccentric exercises now seem to be the preffered treatment for achilles issues. So lowering the heel and stretching rather than heel raises which contract the muscles.
Even the NHS seems to have adopted the technique.

Hi,
I misused the word isometric in my previous post.
"An isometric contraction is when we are able to apply a force to a muscle group without changing the shape or size of that muscle at the same time. So while in a concentric and eccentric contraction you will either lengthen or shorten a muscle group, in isometric the muscle group will neither lengthen nor shorten."
So I do the heel raise and drop in one exercise, but this also includes a isometric part when you are holding the movement.

But we are getting beyond ourselves.

GP......refers you to............physiotherapist...............exercises / scans / other and do what is suggested.

I have to do my foot exercises and some for my back every day or just become crippled, I stay off meds too.

I spent years on anti inflammatory meds now I take none.

Quick update - saw my doctor this morning. He thinks at least one aspect of my problems is compression of the sciatic nerve because of the numbness I get. He has referred me to the Muscular Skeletal Clinic where they can look at all possible aspects of this. I won't risk any strengthening exercises at the moment until I've spoken to them.

Thanks again for all the responses so far, it is so helpful to hear other peoples experiences and suggestions.

Natural Ankling - I am on steriod inhalers for my asthma. I hope this isn't too much of a tendon risk, as my asthma would be worse without it!

Hi,
Your problem sounded complex in respect of no pain and weakness.
Glad to see your are being referred to specialist who should give a indication of what is going on there.
No, if you are not in pain and have weakness, along with short tendons / muscles whatever, correct diagnosis of what is wrong before any recommended exercises by physio.
http://www.differencebetween.info/diffe ... ndinopathy
If you have tendinitis (again correct words) or tendonitis same thing = inflammation, tendinosis = degeneration, tendinopathy = disease / condition affecting tendon.
So correct diagnosis is important.
Yours may well be several things going on, from what you have said in posts.

Cycled over 160 miles ten days ago, no real problem as I have done this many times.
This week did 6.5 miles of coastal path earlier in week, me and my partner are suffering still, I have two aggravated calf muscles with pain to walk first thing in morning. See how easy that is despite my walking history.
More worryingly I have symptoms that have turned up since recovering from a bike fall last November, today pain and stiffness in one calf going down into foot and numbness in ball of foot when walking briskly for a quarter of a mile.
Identical to symptoms I had before removing a clot type blockage in my artery behind the knee, arterial thrombosis.
I was waiting till today to test it and sure enough its there, so I do need to ring doctor tomorrow.
I suffer greatly with nerve problems due to a back injury, can't sleep at all with pain in one leg, only solution is regular exercises along with cycling three times a week, that does it, dread getting too old to fend it off.
Good luck with your diagnosis.
Sorry I am not medical at all, your asthma meds affecting your tendons not sure what if any, that's for your GP.
Make sure you tell your specialist all your history of injuries etc.

Thanks Natural Ankling, good luck with your problems too!

It is probably nothing so simple, but all I can suggest for the calves is using the foam roller if they are tight. Best wishes!

I used to suffer from Achilles tendinitis and I wasn't doing a lot of hiking at that time, at first, I had a lot of inflammation but little pain

Thanks for your experiences Matthew, another one without pain! :D

I saw a physio yesterday. She is not convinced about Achilles tendonitis as the diagnosis because of the lack of pain. My doctor thought it could be compression of the sciatic nerve, but the physio doesn't think it is that because my numbness starts in my ankle and spreads up.

For now we are going to explore the issue that I pronate inwards on my right foot, which she thinks could be compressing a nerve in the outward-facing side of my ankle, where I am experiencing most numbness. I have been given a Theraband exercise to strengthen the inside of my right ankle, and been told to get some insoles with arch support (which is proving tricky as I need them to include a 1 cm heel raise as well as my right leg is shorter, and most full length insoles are for comfort, not height increase).

I'm not convinced it is nerve entrapment because I had the same numbness feelings when I damaged my left ankle a few years ago (and during multiple flare-ups since), and that injury was to the inside of that ankle. Also I felt like I did a specific injury (to both ankles at various points); if it was a nerve entrapment I don't think I would be able to trace my problem back to specific incidents like that.

But anyhow, I'm happy to explore this as long as I don't get worse, I really hope it is this because it seems like it would be a relatively easy fix.

Hi,
Nerve problem might be more difficult to fix than simple tendinitis.

I have nerve damage to my problematic ankle / foot / lower leg, this is old 30 years since artery op, when I saw the docs the other day she checked my lower back and raised leg to check for sciatica.
After I said about numbness in the foot...............
This has to be eliminated before you look at the muscles especially as you have no pain.

Although you have had damage in the past , when recovered did you ever walk with flat shoes successfully for a distance of say two to three miles without stopping.
I ask as apart from the dancing you are not saying much about normal brisk walking etc.
If indeed you have over pronation, whether this is historical injury / weakness changing your posture, this needs sorting.
You are young 38 it all goes down hill as you hit 50 - 60 like me, its harder to maintain pain free just doing basic tasks.

Stick at it, med people don/t always explain all the detail even though its important to mention, but they will be following a set route to eliminate most common first due to you symptoms.

Hi Natural Ankling

Aside from the cycling and dancing, when I am well my other activities include gardening and visiting parks/gardens/countryside etc which involves a fair bit of walking. I usually wear trainers for anything like that.

Even when 'well' I can't really do much brisk walking anymore because it tends to send me downhill again.

I tried my Theraband exercise last night for the first time and hey presto my ankle is worse this morning :x . I wouldn't mind trying something that doesn't help, but it's actively making me worse again! But I guess I have to keep doing it a bit longer before I give up.

Last week I had to work from home and use crutches if I left the house. Over the last few days I had improved and been back at work without the crutches but I'm worried I will soon end up back at home unable to walk if I continue trying this exercise. I'm so fed up with all of this :(

IT DOES at first then you keep it up, don't give in...................................

that's how physiotherapy works!

I damaged an achilles tendon around 40 years ago - it was on a long hill walk, and towards the end it just started giving me some pain, but I carried on and made it worse. I had ultrasound treatment on it followed by a series of exercises, and that pretty much fixed it - but it can still play up from time to time even now.

When it starts to give me trouble, it doesn't start as pain. It's sort of a mix of mild numbness and a strange niggling twitchiness, but if I carry on it will eventually turn into pain.

As far as cycling goes, it's only affected me once and that was last year. At the time, my fitness was poor, and I was on a long hilly ride with gears that weren't low enough and I was grinding too hard. By the end, I was in a bit of pain. I've since repeated that ride with better gearing and had no problem.

As someone else has suggested, I think grinding in a higher gear can be a pretty bad idea if you have achilles tendon issues. Fortunately I'm very much a spinner rather than a grinder, and that definitely helps keep the problem away.

Not sure if this is any help, but I hope they work it out for you.

Agreed! I ruptured my achilles a few years ago - surgery, in plaster + on crutches for 13 weeks, but the hardest part of it all was the physio once the plaster was off. Really tough! So, stick with it.

AlanO - I totally identify with your description. But this seems to be a barrier to an Achilles tendinitis diagnosis!

I am continuing with my physio exercises folks. Hard to say if it is working, but it's not making me feel worse like the first attempt!
