Join a club, or just get a BC racing licence and have a go

https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/

check rules & regulations https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/road/ ... ution?c=EN

you can also try time trials https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/

there's also track racing. If you are in north London then Welwyn track league might take your fancy

http://welwynwheelers.org.uk/track-league

on the page above it explains what to do if you are a beginner, i.e. how to get training/accreditation so that you can ride in races. Most velodromes have a similar scheme. in London;

eg Herne hill
http://www.hernehillvelodrome.com/whats-on/getting-started/

Lee valley
https://www.visitleevalley.org.uk/en/content/cms/london2012/velo-park/velo-track/

All tracks hold sessions for complete novices and training sessions for riders who have had some experience already but are not yet 'match fit/ready'.

Another (often overlooked) form of cycle sport is HPV racing, under the auspices of BHPC. You can turn up and compete on a standard road bike if you like.

There is also cyclo-cross, MTB racing, you name it.

cheers

Without group riding experience you are likely to be a danger to yourself and others in any massed start road or track cycling. The usual way to start is by riding time trials where you can judge your performance against others without direct competition, and by getting group riding experience by joining a local club.

Join a club. Maybe ask if they have people racing.

Just be satisfied to just hang in for a couple of races and you will soon get the hang of it and be able to mix it with the best. Good Luck and enjoy.
