When it starts to give me trouble, it doesn't start as pain. It's sort of a mix of mild numbness and a strange niggling twitchiness, but if I carry on it will eventually turn into pain.
Alan, when you did the initial injury, I know you said it was on a long walk, but did you do something particular to it, like fall and land awkwardly? My physio said Achilles tendinitis with only numbness instead of pain comes as a result of a trauma event like that. She doesn't think my experience counts as a trauma.
