Alan, when you did the initial injury, I know you said it was on a long walk, but did you do something particular to it, like fall and land awkwardly? My physio said Achilles tendinitis with only numbness instead of pain comes as a result of a trauma event like that. She doesn't think my experience counts as a trauma.

No, it was something that I can only recall coming on fairly gradually over the final few miles of the walk. I wasn't aware of any specific incident that might have triggered it.

I suffered with my right for nearly a year. I caused it by initially getting shin splints by running downhill for a train (That I still missed) Then I think because of the discomfort of the shin splints, I must have tensed up or overcompensated in my locomotion and ended up with the tendon getting damaged.
I've given up long ago with doctors for soft tissue problems. I tried doing gentle stretches after exercise. And I eat more beetroot. This is believed to improve blood flow. It's believed that tendon injuries take longer to heal because they have a lot less blood flow. I also take extra Chloine (not chlorine :)
I avoid at all costs NSAIDS as whatever benefit in initial pain control and inflammation reduction, is outweighed by adverse effects of longer term use.
A growing number of doctors believe that NSAIDS could become the next major scandal. It's alleged the benefit of aspirin for people at risk of strokes or heart attack, is outweighed by the increased of bleeding everywhere from the brain to the stomach. https://www.wddty.com/news/2017/06/stop ... -work.html

Hi,
Any weakness injury you have in your youth will likely show up later in life.
I still live with back weakness but am active because I do daily physio for all my weaknesses, I used to be on Anti-inflammatory / nsaids daily but don't need them and they never improved my long term health and mobility.
Getting the right exercises is important. See a NHS physiotherapist for correct diagnosis.
On anticoagulants I should of been on something when I lost my spleen, I was not!
Have had an operation to sort my arterial thrombosis..................30 years later its maybe back...............I did something silly in the period after falling of my bike.......whilst coming back to fitness, in my frustration I stopped two preventive meds...trying to remove myself of too many meds with possible side effects.

Possible that not taking my aspirin for three weeks was not a good idea.........?..........seeing vascular surgeon on Friday.

I have had good results with NHS phisio's.........GP's have a difficult job and are seen as least corruptible of any job.

I would advise not to stop taking meds without lots of advice / thought, plenty of stuff on the net that will suit any conspiracy theory.
I am not directing this at any other comment /poster here, so this is not personal.
Of course if any discomfort is had with meds or not you see your GP!

Aspirin is given when you lose your spleen or should be.

Totally agreed, you should never stop taking any medication suddenly, or without consulting your GP. But read up on it first so you can ask the right questions, and maybe prompt the doctor into giving sage advice instead of her/him just saying "you should carry on as I told you before and stop worrying Mr/s Smith" If you have the knowledge, s/he is more likely to take your desire to improve your health and reduce complications and side effects if you show you are intelligent and bothered enough to research, else they tend to just 'treat' you as a child needing to be told what to do and how to do it...

Hi,
I would of thought any addition to foot wear is avoiding a problem causing a problem rather that curing it.
Different types of tendonitis.
Returning to natural normal motion I would of thought through exercise and stretching, under supervision, unless there is a definite problem with parts that will never fix with exercises.
I am no physiotherapist, but what is the long term solution to wearing heel lifts?

When they talk of walking you should always throw in hills / off road not just around pavements.

It is common to try heel lifts, apparently it helps to offload the tendon and makes you feel more comfortable (because it's in a shorter position). When you get better you stop wearing them.

Hi,
So over a week into exercises.

Is it still doing some pain ?
Your physiotherapist will say on you leaving come back in two weeks if there is still a problem...................?

I will repeat what I have before in these posts (IIRC without rereading), that I found after crawling around house on hands and knees for several days in agony, the just getting on and off floor including turning over on floor excruciating even when progressing to crutches................,groin injury I could not walk unaided for over two weeks.

How is it going :)

Hi Ankling,

It's been 3 weeks now, and I can't say the Theraband exercises (which I have done religiously) and the insole have made much difference to be honest. I can feel my ankle is better aligned with the insole supporting my arch, the physio thought I might be experiencing a nerve compression problem which the improved alignment should alleviate. But the way the ankle feels, and what activities I can do, has not improved.

I haven't been in much pain (unlike your horrendous groin injury!) it is a sort of numbness/tingling sensation (as AlanO described), then if I do too much my ankle gets inflamed and I can't walk. It never really hurts though, probably because I recognise the warning signs and stop whatever is irritating it. The left foot is playing up again as well, driving makes it swell up, so now getting to work is a problem.

I have a follow-up physio appointment next week, I am going to ask if there is any chance of getting an MRI on the NHS. If not I might have to get one privately. I have struggled with this for years on the left ankle and since Oct last year on the right. I've read so much in all this time I am sure it is Achilles tendonitis in both, but only an MRI can confirm that. I've had enough of physios not believing me because I don't have enough pain!

Sorry I wasn't sure from your message if your groin injury is still ongoing, if so best wishes for a speedy recovery, that sounds nasty!

Hi,
OK.
Groin injury cleared up altogether thanks, hope I never do that again!
On-going with my lower leg and pain with numbness in foot, but only with severe stress on bike after a few hours, walking can come on in minutes and a normal pace would be about an hour or so, this has only come on since inactivity falling off bike, was slight previously.
Due a hospital appointment for treadmill stress to diagnose vascular / muscle compressing something / nerves?
I really struggled to get operation in 87, they thought I was mad because I ran through discomfort and pain up to an hour then it eased off, so all training was painful and made me limp.
Started running again when I was 9.5 stone, left hospital at 8.3 now 12 stone and not really overweight at a slight under six foot.
So not surprising they did now want to do anything.

Your problem sounds very frustrating!
Keep badgering your GP.

Good luck.

Saw the physio yesterday. Like others before her, because she could not make my symptoms fit with any particular diagnosis she had basically decided I am over-reacting, and I should just resume my normal activities. I am sure I had explained before, and attempted to do so again: that is exactly what I want to do, and I do keep trying. But when I do my symptoms get worse, so I have to stop. I can't afford to be unable to walk, and thus work! But she just wouldn't listen, I think she has just decided I'm some lazy good-for-nothing.

I also asked if she would complete a referral form so I could get privately funded MRI, but she wouldn't do that either, even though it would be at no cost to the NHS.

So I went home thoroughly demoralised. Then a couple of hours later the physio phoned me, said she has spoken to the specialist and they now think I might have Peroneal Tendinopathy, and can I come in for a new assessment. I will probably go, but I'm sick of going round in circles.

This link gives plenty of information on peroneal tendon problems. You will be able to decide how good a match it is to your own symptoms and in a better position to have an informed conversation at your next consultation. Sometimes practitioners can be a bit slow at recognising they have come to the edge of their expertise and reluctant to refer you on for further investigation and management. Their personalities and attitudes play a big part in how they handle matters if you introduce this as a topic of conversation!

If you are getting nowhere fast you could ask who they recommend for sports injury ankle problems in your area (or further afield if there is nobody local and you are able to travel).

Good luck getting accurately diagnosed and appropriately managed. Sorry it has been such a frustrating journey up to now.

Thanks for the link Steve. I hope you don't mind, I have sent you a PM.

I don't think it would go down well if I suggest to my physio that she has reached the limits of her expertise

soaking in epsom salts works for many ligament type injuries. something to so with the magnesium getting to where it is needed.

I used overnight wraps on my tennis elbow and it did improve things.
