Back on track ..........

Seven done today. Should have been eight, but I forgot about Pillaton despite going past the village. I only realised after way too late, but it's not that far from here and not very far from getting some others, so I can do it.
St Dominick, St Mellion, Botusflemming, Saltash.

Left home at just after 9am and headed south to Landrake (bypassing Pillaton village centre) then off to St Germans, Sheviock, Anthony, St John, Millbrook, and Maker, then across the Cremyll ferry into Plymouth, then the train home.
I did the ride on Moulton (again) but did intend on doing in on Mercian, but as the forecast was for rain, I thought it best to ride a bike with mudguards and one with a decent saddle bag for my Goretex and extra layers. As it happens, it was dry, warm and sunny-ish.

It was 29.16 miles to Cremyll with 3,030ft of ascent. Nice and hilly eh?

For Anthony, I couldn't find a way in other than the steps.
Moulton is heavy, so I wasn't going to climb the steps with it.

I'll start a new thread on Maker church in Tea Shop as I have a soft spot for it with respect to my time in the RN and being involved with weapon systems.

Fifteen done so far and still over two hundred do do yet!

I don't think that civil parishes are necessarily the same as those of the church. Ditto dioceses / counties.

Similarly a current parish may contain more than one church, I think. And that's just limiting yourself to C of E!

Yep. Aware of that.
The parishes often have more than one church, but as far as I can find out, there's only one Parish Church.
Whatever happens, I'm visiting the main church in the parish.

"St Peter the Poor Fisherman" is an Interesting church that we visited when we stayed on the south Devon Coast nearby in May. It is right on the coast SE of Newton Ferrers. It was built around 1000 years ago so the fishing community there didn't have to travel inland to bury their dead, leaving that bit of coast undefended from raiders. It is still consecrated but it is partially ruined, although it has has some preservation/restoration work done in recent years.

The downside of visiting by bike is the fierce hill that you have to go down (through the caravan park) & then return back up! (nearly 250ft of ascent in less than 1/2 mile).

I really love climbing church towers, it is great to see the view but also to ascend and descend several flights of stairs in the gloaming. If one is lucky the person minding the church will relate some history

Castell Conwy has a chapel and many towers that one may ascend
The town walls are good too, free but a bit scary

Off out again this morning.
Going on Moulton again as it's shiny and clean!

St Dominick, St Mellion, Landulph, Botusflemming, Saltash, St Stephen-by-Saltash, then across the suspension bridge into England, and down to the Torpoint Ferry to cross back to Cornwall to get Torpoint church.

I thought I'd missed out Pillaton the other day, but looking at the parishes, I see that Pillaton is in "St Mellion with Pillaton" parish, so I won't bother going there as I only need to go to the main church.

I'll not keep putting photos up, as it's going to be a little boring!

Next few outings to more of the parish churches is going to be a little less straightforward, as I've done all the easy ones.
Maybe the next lot will entail fewer churches due to the distances involved from home and back ....... and the weather is turning too.

When I get further afield, I'll have to use the car.

Just planning the next outing, and another one too.
I can do a circular route from home to Looe and back taking in St Ive, Quethiock, Menheniot, St Keyne, Duloe, Morval, Looe and St Martin-by-Looe. This is about 45miles but with some hills!

Second ride, I'm going to have to drive to Liskeard and park up. This will save 30 miles as a there-and-back on the A390.
Taking in Liskeard, Herodsfoot, Lanreath, Pelynt, Polperro, St Veep, St Winnow, Lostwithiel, Boconnoc, Dobwalls, St Neot and St Cleer.
There's some SERIOUS hill-climbing on that route and it's 55miles .......... even though I'm driving to Liskeard and back.

Doing that lot, will get me to 42 parish churches out of (a probable) 218.
20% ish.

The thing is, I've already been to these places!

When you have all the churches I am sure we can dream up another challenge to keep you going
All post offices, or post boxes, or telephone kiosks (there are fewer of those now) or chapels or pubs or libraries

Talking of towers, there's an interesting one on the Cotehele estate* (nr Calstock) - where a friend and I were inspired to ride to Barcelona for the 1992 Olympic Games !

Yes, and excellent tower!

I was thinking the other day about describing it, as it's well worth a visit if anyone is down this way.
You can get there by walking from Calstock Railway Station along Danescombe Valley and following the path round to the left after the creek.

It's an optical illusion of a tower, and built as a folly. It's triangular but looks square from a distance, and it's small, though looks big from a distance.
Inside, there's a little narrow spiral staircase in pitch dark - no windows - to the top where you can see out over the countryside and valley, and the battlements up there are only at thigh height, so be careful!
