When I was teaching Bikeability, I mostly rode my bike, though if I was working inside the M25 (I lived in north central Essex), or in the southeast fo the county, it got a bit far. When I worked inside the M25, I worked with someone other than my normal teaching partner, so I either used public transport, or drove myself. In the southeast of Essex, my teaching partner drove there, and our stuff all fit inside his van. He rode his bike to & from most sessions, as well. I sometimes told the kids approximately where I/we lived, and got them to guess every day how far I/we had cycled. I would also tell them that I went shopping by bike, and where, or if I stopped someplace on the way home the day before; if I took my kids to the childminder/school before I came to teach Bikeability, etc.

It was a bit of fun, but it also helped them understand that cycling wasn't just a leisure activity, or a sport, and I could explain that some places, it was the same amount of time (or faster) to go by bike, how I carried stuff with me, etc.

My wife cycled to work this morning, in a bit of a gale. But late this afternoon I will be driving to a supermarket to get stuff we need, and on the way home I'll pick her up, with the bike, so she can come home with a lot of clobber she wouldn't be able to bring if she cycled. A flexible, non-dogmatic approach.

As ever, it depends what the alternative is. Driving part (or most) of the way then cycling is an improvement (ie more cycling, less driving) when the alternative is driving all the way, but not when compared to cycling the whole way (or taking the train part of the way).

The alternative to driving the 150 miles with my bike, riding kit, SAR kit, medic bag, laptop, training equipment etc, would be to not go at all. Not possible to ride with that lot, even with a voluminous trailer, and I'd need several people to help me on the train, even if the train went doo to doo, which it doesn't.

But that's a professional choice. The alternative would be to not do it at all, and then a load of keen cyclists won't be trained with some advanced skills, a d wouldn't be able to ride for EMS purposes at all.

For my leisure riding I'd never drive and ride. I really don't dig that at all.

As a Philistine........

I live in a wonderful country and have "cycled" the coast of England, Welsh Borders, a lot of Scotland and Wales.

If we take my trip to Wales, and cycling from Chepstow to St Davids... I had a choice.

I can repet my rid to Chepstow, or I can use the car to extend my ride. I offer no apologies for that

This weekend i will drive in my 3.2 ltr diesel truck to Gainsborough .... i will park up on the site of one of the largest steam and diesel traction engine manufactures in the world ... now a Tesco's.
I will then cycle a 68 mile loop over roads i have never ridden on ... new perspectives, new cafes ... new !!
On my return i will have a Tesco brekkie ... or not ....
The only thing tragic about my day is the people who would want to control my life, stop me, curtail my pleasure and fun.
Cycling is fun ... if you want to wear your "tragic" hair shirt ... do so with pleasure .... just keep away from me !
Why do people want to dominate and control others ?
The only thing tragic about this post ... is this post ......
Maybe i should take up kayaking .. on the grass in the park behind my house ..as suggested .. ish .....
OP .. you do not know me, my family, but you want to control our lives ..... why, what have we done to you ?

Left wing liberal facist ... could be wrong.

Plot me the route, on a Sunday, from Rotherham to Gainsborough and return by train with a bicycle. The carbon footprint of the journey. compared with my 42 mpg vehicle journey.
Suspect it may be .. Rotherham - Doncaster -Newark- Lincoln - Gainsborough.
Or worse .......
Lets say 6-7 hours of travel as opposed to 90 mins in my truck .!!
OH . the train will be burning Red Diesel .... cheap for a reason, nothing to do with taxes ...

But back to the OP.

Is the National Trust part of the tragedy?

If were honest, driving for any purpose is questionable, but in this pollution and environmenatally conscious times driving for pleasure (including to the National Trust) is indefensible.

Twas in the news on Monday that scientists have discovered particulates in the bodies of foetuses still in the womb - think on that next time you fancy driving to a National a trust site half a country away.

There are people on this forum who seem to think doing anything solely for pleasure, especially things they themselves don't find pleasurable, is indefensible.
