Ergon grips for 2018 Brompton ‘M’ handlebars

Post by GOHughes »

Which of these can be fitted to the M type handlebars without cutting them to fit? I have measured the standard Brompton rubber grips at 110 mm.

I don’t want to cut them to fit or move the brake and gear levers

Having searched online it seems that the only Ergon grips that would fit are the GS1 dual grip shift (95mm).

It’s especially confusing as the product numbers on the Ergon website do not seem to match those used by most retailers.

I fitted Ergon grips to two Bromptons, one with previous M handlebars and one with the latest M handlebars.
I also updated the brake levers and gear changers to the latest.
The latest handlebars give more length for the grip and/or allow for wider hands.

Just take a fine hacksaw and cut the inner edge of the Ergon grip to give the length you want.
There is room for upto 125mm length for the new handlebars with new brake/gear pods.
I find 112mm suits me with large square hands.
There is room for upto 105mm length for the old handlebars with new brake/gear pods.

It is quite easy and quick to do.
I think most standard Ergon grips come in at around 140mm length.
The large and small size is for the girth of the grip not the length.

The hardest job is getting the glued on Brompton grips and the glue off...

If it’s a 2018 model, they’re not glued on they have screws like the Ergons. Just changed mine for Ergonomic GP2s. I did trim a very small bit off them with a Stanley Knife.

Thanks for the replies. I have ordered a pair of the GP2 gripshift, both left and right grips of this models are 95mm. Good to know that the standard grips on the 2018 Brompton are locked with an allen key bolt - glad I found out before I set about them with a Stanley knife!
