Pathetic https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland- ... e-45837536
Jurists decide that it's only a little bit careless and not dangerous and the judge decides prison isn't necessary and that the killer is remorseful. why isn't the government reviewing this nonsense way to decide what is an acceptable manner to drive that does not kill or maim when those sitting not just on the jury but also the judges are clueless and have a vested interest in the outcome by definition of the majority being culprits themselves. Oh wait, they can't because they are too busy concocting BS to charge cyclists with

After the recent £300 penalty for riding on the prom, we get this! https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/ ... e-was-hit/

OK it is the Mail so we get a pic with flesh on but the story is true and with sentences like this no wonder motorists think they can literally get away with murder

There's a thread running, but apropos of your comment, I doubt that it would have that effect, unless you were being deliberately hyperbolic?
Re: A place to record lenient sentencing for motorvehicle....
why you say that ?because if you get behind the wheel of a car drunk, you are a potential murderer as much as one who carries a knife.
And yes, I have done that when younger, I thank myself that I never caused an issue at all and yes got away with it but I realised when 30 that could not continue ...

Does anyone know what was the sentence for the driver who admitted killing "elderly" mother of Chris Boardman?
No doubt defence counsel could plead that this was a "contributory factor" and that the driver wasn't
really guilty as charged-just a victim of the circumstances, him being in the wrong place at the wrong time and
not able to avoid someone who shouldn't be cycling at that age??
Contributory factor?
Locally, three years ago, club cyclist had head injuries after crashing due to badly maintained road (tree roots)
and now suffers with epilepsy.
Awarded £1,000,000 damages.
Defence pleaded that that he had contributed to damage because he had neglected to wear a helmet!!
Damages reduced 25% so he got £750,000.
That's how the law protects cyclists?

Seems a queer idea
The law of unintended consequences may apply, sentences may get longer
Entertainer, juvenile, curmudgeon, PoB, 30120
Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott

Exactly as judges sometimes do understand what is worth a jail sentence

Looking at that only from a traffic enforcement perspective, on the face of it, it would mean an end to imprisonment for breathalyser offences and driving while disqualified. Dangerous driving would only be punishable with imprisonment in the Crown Court.

Sadly, from experience in prisons, putting motoring offenders in prison tends to create criminals - and, of course, it costs a fortune to keep them in there.
I'd personally like to see a minimum 20yr driving ban and a fine that is proportionate to the ability to pay.
Going to prison is something people cannot visualise and therefore doesn't deter, no being able to drive and being poorer, that's another matter

Some of us gave been campaigning for this for years. At last government appears to be getting it.
Of course, what is needed is robust and credible community sentences. They are well known to reduce reoffending. They would, IMV, include tough bans for serious motoring offences. Killer drivers generally get longer sentences than 6 months anyway, depending on the circmstances involved.

Re campaigning, the media spin on this is that personal violence and sexual offences won't be included in this. I take that to mean that some campaign groups have already got their oar in.
Re alternatives to imprisonment, they would need money - megabucks - which may not be forthcoming. Our gruesome local prisons are contemporaries of the large mental institutions which were closed to be replaced with care in the community which has never been properly funded. Indeed, a substantial part of the prison population is people who would once have been detained in hospital. Let's remember that a big part of the probation service has been privatised and is now said to be failing. It would be easy to empty and demolish some of these gaunt buildings, hard to organise alternatives.
Re unintended consequences: a previous initiative here was the law requiring that all sentences of 6 months or less should be suspended which was rescinded when it increased the prison population.

IMO the government can see a GE coming PDQ,they're in no doubt of their unpopularity and are now trying to gain favour wherever they can.
