1963 National Road Race Championship

Post by robj7744 »

Does anyone know the exact date and route of the 1963 National Road Race Championship? I believe it was based in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. Thanks.

Did you find it with a search engine? If so, what terms?

OP - you're correct about Kenilworth, according to http://cyclingarchives.com/ritfiche.php?ritid=50114 - date was 13th October but I didn't find a route.

I know that Albert Hitchen is no longer with us perhaps someone knows the whereabouts of Bob Addy, John Clarey, Billy Perkins, Ken Nuttall or Alan Jacob.
Colin Lewis might have rode it (he would have been 21). Although he's sold his shop I think they still keep in contact with him.

Thanks to all that have replied. The date of the event seems to have been added recently to cycling archives, it was not there when I had last checked.

I can find no other information on the internet about the event.

As it happens Alan Jacob is my dad, and is still cycling 100 miles a week, every week. (Although he is now on an Bianchi ebike having had trouble keeping up with the club members 40 years younger than himself.) The reason I am looking is that we would like to re-ride the route with him. Unfortunately he has no records of the event and only remembers it as being in the midlands.

I am pursuing some other leads for this, and will follow up the other suggestions in this thread.

Wow! :D
Can I say, that this forum is absolutely wonderful and is a national treasure.

I wish Alan Jacob all the luck in the world and hope he has a good ride reminiscing about October 1963 ................ when it was nearly my 12th birthday.

I have put the request out around some of my midland cycling friends, some might be old enough to recall.

I wonder if this is a case where paper records might be a better resource than the internet. In particular, there seem to be people who still have long series of back numbers of the comic AKA Cycling Weekly. FWIW, IIRC in those days it was Cycling and Mopeds. For most of its existence it was simply called Cycling.

Since the date is known, why not ask on cycling forums for anybody with a copy. Also, there seem to be several archives but the first I tried came up with Error 404.

Thanks again for the help via this forum. I have tracked down a couple of paper archives which I need to visit as soon as I get time.

My dad remembers Colin Lewis and did meet him but says he never cycled against him. Colin really came onto the scene just as my dad finished his career. So he is pretty certain Colin did not ride in the 63 nationals.

My dad cycles with the Alton CC these days:

There is a photo of him here which I took when we were cycling in France earlier this year:

Don't ignore the possibility of private collections of the comic. I suspect that the most likely type of rider who will have kept them might be a time trial rider, bearing in mind that in the 1960's, quite a large part of the coverage was the results of time trials. Also, it's most likely to be a specific thread title asking if anybody has a copy for that date that will achieve a result, rather than assuming they'll latch onto a thread like this.

Members of this forum often provide details of old races. Admittedly time trials but if they are copied from the magazines......... It is worth asking

Nobody has mentioned the BCF which would only have been three or four years old in 1963.

One of my contacts is checking with her mum, it is worth mentioning her mum remembers the now disgraced Jimmy Saville finishing an event in Kenilworth.

Might be worth asking on retrobike. I believe that a couple of the members are old time racers.
