says winged wheel signs were issued from 1883 onwards but does not cite a reference for this. Other sources say about 1888 for the wall signs to appear.

The original logo was officially usurped by the Winged Wheel in 1886. Trademark 1885.

Very nice, but I'd spend the entire ride with my OCD going mad about the missing apostrophe.

It is not missing, it is absent by design. The company name is officially registered without an apostrophe .

And yet the one on the Cycling UK website has one:

Well... the word logo (short for logotype) originally referred specifically to a number of letters cast together in a single piece (from the Greek logos, "word") while an icon is a stylised pictorial representation. But the meanings have blurred over the years. Most company logos are a combination of the logotype (the name, written in a specific typeface or style) and a distinctive image.

Take Amazon, which is the word "Amazon" with a little orange smiley/arrow/swoosh (whatever) underneath it. Once you're familiar with the main logo and have seen it lots of times, it's easy to make the association with the tiny icon they use in the web browser - an "a" with the orange swoosh. If you've never heard of Amazon and never seen their full logo, it's meaningless. Which of these would you recognise if you had never seen the full logo?

I'm not aware of where to find such stickers and I suspect that they are no longer in production.

At least CUK are now selling nice retro winged wheel patches suitable for saddlebags/panniers/etc. again; not quite as cool as the vintage ones, but they'll do the trick...

A slightly connected question: I've been leasurely looking for a woolen cycling jersey for quite some time that would not put me into the mamil league. Wool because I've positive memories of that material back from my race cycling days back in the eighties of last century.
A while ago I spotted the retro one in the CTC shop (https://shop.cyclinguk.org/cyclists-touring-club-wool-jersey) which I quite liked (including the retro logo on it) - only to discover that the bigger sizes were sold out already. Now they seem to be back and I've three questions:

1.) does anyone have experience with it, regarding quality and sizing? I am no racer any more, rather a touring guy - so a somewhat slack fit would be preferred.

2.) I discovered that the jerseys seem to come from Torn (http://torm.cc/) and you can get the exact same jersey in the same stunning color scheme from https://spcycles.com/epages/f16c048c-e949-4d87-996e-9f7ec7a844b3.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/f16c048c-e949-4d87-996e-9f7ec7a844b3/Products/1001 for 39 Pounds instead of the 75 Pounds they charge in the CTC shop.

Just w/o the CTC logo. Ist that true? The logo makes the jersey look better in my eyes. But a 35 Pound premium to have advertizing on the jersey? I had expected it to be the other way round: cheaper with advertizing on it. Which would then bring me to

3.) I've no connection to CTC (and live in Germany where nobody knows the CTC anyway), but somewhat like the old retro logo - fits the jersey pretty well. Would I make a fool of myself proudly cycling around with a CTC logo on my jersey? I would never buy a jersey with brand advertizing on it like i.e. those factory team replica jerseys - I just like the look of the retro CTC-jersey. What do you think?

No personal experience, but some of the folk in my local group have some and are very happy with them. Worth noting that these are 'sportwool' rather than pure wool - effectively a fabric with a lycra outer face and a merino inner face. This has some of the benefits of both - wool's temperature and odour regulation, whilst being easier to wash, and not as saggy as pure wool. There are still pure wool jerseys available, but they're quite niche - Jura are one of the companies still making them. Sizing-wise, the CTC jerseys come up small for a UK brand - with a 42" chest I'd normally be an L, but would be an XL for these.

Yes, these are Torm jerseys - if you look closely at some of the pictures on the CUK site you can see the Torm logo. It is quite a steep markup, but the winged wheel embroidery etc. will be costing extra to do, and by the standards of posh kit the jerseys aren't horrendous - though it shows what good value Torm's stuff is.

Torm’s website only says £39 until you choose a blue and white one (or any other colour and size that I tried, though presumably some undesirable combination is indeed £39). Ones that look like the CTC jersey are £61. At least in my browser.

Put it this way: I’m in a similar situation and have been tempted to do the same, only not doing so yet because of the cost. It’s a good jersey and a fine logo, and I’d be pleased to support the organisation even today.
