Hi,
Yes, Average speed will be total distance and total time.
Of course if you are stationary on route you might want to work it different, total time or time on bike.

I wasn't suggesting that people sit and calculate their average speed in this way I was just showing how the average works. I used to time-trial and many people did 10 mile time-trials riding into a headwind with their speedo showing about 20 mph in one direction 30 mph in the other and were amazed that their average wasn't 25 mph because the 'knew' the average was (20+30)/2.

After 5 consecutive years of 10000-12000 miles per annum, I'll just about scrape in with a daily average of 20 this year. Partly due to finding my hill walking legs again and the love of getting away from the ever busier roads of Snowdonia. In previous years there's only been 5 or 6 days when the weather (gales) made it impossible or too dangerous to cycle. There's been 10 days so far in 2018!

What you're missing is as I said "If you want a higher average speed, you need to travel faster on the slower bits rather than travel faster on the faster bits!"

If you have an average speed of 14mph on and off road you will need a speed off road not much below 14mph to achieve that, as the slowest speed is the most significant factor influencing the average.

Re: Ten Miles a day - December 2018 and overall

Post by foxyrider »

Well for completeness I thought I should post December's numbers. I did miss a full week's riding as I managed a tumble in week two, severely spraining my wrist. Despite that I managed to log 1489km (925mi) with 15859m (52031ft) of climbing.

The per ride day values come in at 87km (54mi) and 933m (3061ft) whilst the values per day of the month came out as 48km (30mi) and 512m (1680ft).

Well that was the month but what about the year?

In total it was 16494km (10249mi) and 193218m (633917ft). That come out at 94.3km (58mi) and 1104m (3622ft) per ride over the 175 ride days. For the year in total it's 45.2km (28mi) and 529m (1736ft) per day.

So yes, I smashed the 10 mile a day target and also cleared the mythical 10k miles for the year - neither of which I expected back in January. It would be nice to think I could manage similar numbers for 2019 but I don't intend to spend the year chasing the numbers (maybe if i'm close next December), if it happens it happens.

So did you lot manage the 10 a day challenge?

Yes, with 46 miles to spare.

Typical of the last 10 years since atrial fibrillation kicked in.

68 year total now 369,396 and at 83 an electric bike beckons. Do miles on this count?

I made it with 20.7 miles to spare. No such challenges as Grandad faces, just limited time to ride. A lot of my miles were commuting, although I did extend the routes by the odd mile or two wherever possible.

I'm pleased though, as I don't think I've managed ten per day for some decades.

4505 miles, so just over 12/day.

For me that seemed just about right. I didn't feel that I was chasing anything, it is simply the mileage that I get doing what I do.

I wish that I knew how many miles I walked last year? I spend as much time walking as I do cycling and completed many 20 or so mile days last year. The best being Saltburn to Hornsea, all along the North East coast, a few days all in lovely sunshine.

2018 was a great year for me....fingers crossed for the same in 2019 !!

Hi,
NO, 200 or so short.
But have managed to hit target for the last 4 years at least.
Keeps me fit enough to do 250 in a day unsuported :)
Time and effort, bike still weighs 67 Ibs :?

Nope, got to 3450 which wasn't bad but a tad short. The first four months were slow due to a house move, DIY, family and weather. After that I got a more interesting commuting route and a new bike so I am optimistic for 2019 (but been there before!).

Dropped off drastically from September and only did 2500 this year. Oh well. More long camping weekends planned for 2019.

I ended up with 5913 miles for the year, which equates to 16.2 miles per day or 114 miles a week on average. An initially low December mileage was boosted by taking part in the Festive 500.
