the modern ones are usually stiffer. This is good or bad depending whether you are tall/heavy/wanting to carry a load or not.

However a dawes audax 631 is a strange one; it has a stiff main frame (with oversise tubes), 1-1/8" steerer but quite flexible folk blades. Not much difference to a current frame in similar materials, but the fork might be noticeably different.

Disc brakes normally add a fair amount of stiffness to a steel fork, potentially less to a carbon fork.

cheers

Not much use to the OP I will admit but for anyone looking to purchase a traditional tourer and reading this thread I can heartily recommend the 708 tube set. It has an oversize top tube and special butted internal profile and although it doesn't create a noticeably heavier frame the torsional resistance in the main triangle is significantly better than 531 and especially noticeable on a larger frameset.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Hi

He's pulled the trigger on a Holdsworth Elan mainly for the disc brakes. I'll borrow it for a ride and get back to all on how it rides.

If the OP wants to spend a bit more on the upgrade, he could consider a new paint job. No decals and hey presto, a custom built steel framed tourer.

An update on the brakes.......

I fitted new inner and outer cables, straddle wires, brake levers (one was damaged) and bought some Swiss Stop brake pads. I cleaned and greased the pivots.

What a difference. The brakes now perform superbly.

I have also fitted some wider handlebars, new inner and outer gear cables and bar tape. All have made quite a difference,

A 2005 bike is old ???, it can't even drink yet.

Old bikes have 3 speed freewheels, Chater Lea hubs and Lauterwasser bends.
