I was pleasantly surprised by that result, it was the only result of the weekend I failed to predict (even if Wales France didn't go quite as I'd expected in play).

The ladies also did rather well - bring shame that the highlights are so flipping delayed. They really ought to form a good chunk of the half time broadcast during the mens event.


Mind you - I think that *was* a try, not a double movement, and I'm pretty sure there was a hand under the Irish try just after the sin bin. But I'm not the ref, and the ref/touch judge and TMO were well positioned to make a better decision than me.

Although my family tree shows I'm Devon and Sussex on Dad's side and the North-East of England on Mam's side which probably explains why I've never been one of those blinkered 'anyone but England' Welshmen.

Mmm, interesting one that, as my Dad's Dad's family originated in Devon and his Mum's family hail from the North East.
Perhaps we're related if we look back far enough.

After the Ireland England match IIRC Driscoll said he had difficulty naming man of the match because all of England played so well.
I think it was just one of those games, like Luck was With England.

My gran was born an Evans, descended from Welsh parents who moved to find work in Liverpool. Welsh from the valleys too. Genetic testing shows a high Scots / Welsh genetic markers. We have no records of Scots or Irish ancestry but it has been alleged that an ancestor from the NE of England originally came from Ireland.

However all that is irrelevant because my parents are English born and so am I. I don't get this sentiment for a land that was last in your bloodline 2, 3 or more generations ago.

Having said this, a cousin is apparently applying for Irish citizenship due to Irish father (who he's had no dealings with since a young kid) so that his kids have a a better chance of getting a us green card. They live in France and his kids want to emigrate to USA. That's not about nationality for sport but residency for a better life (away from Brexit).

Having said that, the England score really mixed things up. Although I expect England to collapse in the next game, unless it's against Italy or Scotland of course.

They'll be going to the right place if they're keen on their own genealogy. Americans love it. Some years ago the after-dinner speaker at a professional event l was at was an American. He started with, and went on at length about, his UK ancestry. You could feel the waves of boredom coming from the audience.

My grandad on my mother's side was American. One of my mum's distant, American cousins did their family tree which shared with our side. Traced it back to Georgetown and back to English born ancestors. The first to go over was a second son of one of the most significant and wealthy merchant class from West Country. Inherited nothing but a modest allowance and funded to get a trade (went to university). He ended up King's surveyor for what has since become about 3 states. He brought yeoman farmers across and got them to put up a barn and farm the land as tenants. That way he took ownership of a vast stretch of land over there becoming very wealthy in his own right.

Then my grandad was a direct make heir to Brigham Young (the guy who led the Mormons to salt lake city).

Seriously, Americans are fascinated with history and ancestry. It seems they're all trying to find a link to the big pioneer names in the history of America. My mum's cousin was more interested with a suspected link to James Bowie of the knife fame or Daniel Boone. Still family folklore has more interesting stories. Like one ancestor was sheriff of a town that needed to relocate. So he went first and sledges the house down a frozen river to where it is now located. Even now his house is still there as the oldest house in the town.
