Apparently the driver was miss-quoted. The police are not pressing charges and have apologised for any embarassment they have caused. What he actually saw was a bald, pink eight legged cat.

Probably a Trans-Cat ... it identifies as an octopus, but can only pretend to have the life experiences of an octopus...

There are plenty of Youtube videos of octopuses walking/slithering and even hunting on land, but generally within a few feet of the sea. If there was one "more than 5km" inland then maybe it was one of these guys on holiday.

I remember when I was a kid, my parents used to call bungee cords like these, "octopus leads". My father had a set of them threaded through a central ring, he used the arrangement to anchor down a load on the roof rack. I suppose they did somewhat suggest an octopus sprawled over the car roof...

And on one occasion the whole load came adrift and fell off, whilst we were motoring along a motorway. Luckily a kind-hearted following motorist alerted us in time. So that motorist really did encounter an "octopus" in the roadway....
