What tyres (possible unicorn content)?

Post by ratherbeintobago »

After some tyres with the following:

26”
About 1.5”
Light tread
Folding

Something like SB8s would be ideal but they seem to be wired only…

They’re a thought; no tread though...

Can you go up to 1.75"? Panaracer Ribmos are available at Planet X in that size for £21 (link).

Searching online, so far I've only found the 26x1.5 size listed in stock at Fawkes Cycles (in Oldham) but considerable more expensive at £31(link). (Incidentally, if you are on their mailing list the emails come from guy@fawkescycles.co.uk which usually makes me smile).

My tandem stoker has Ribmos (700x32) on her tandem & I've no complaints about their performance.

What do you need tread for?

Sorry - should’ve said that usage case is #1 spawn’s bike, which gets ridden on gravel as well as tarmac

Panaracer Paselas? Fit all requirements except the folding bit. I find them quick, comfortable and grippy (but watch for rocks off road as the sidewalls can be fragile - ridden with care they are OK)

(PS I much prefer them to Kojaks which I find get cut up more easily and are less reassuring on greasy roads)

SJS Cycles do sell a folding version of the Pasela TourGuard. Brucey provided a link to them in an earlier post.

Spa are listing Marathon Racer and Supreme.
Supreme is almost slick. Racer has a shallow tread, about 1mm. deep, and they can "let go" without warning on mud or even wet grass.

If the gravel is loose, I don't think a bit of tread will help; I think the movement is gravel on gravel, not tyre on gravel.

I miss the old Marathons with a little bit of Kevlar. Theres a centre ridge so they roll well (and quietly) on tarmac, and the tread blocks aren't so big that they squirm during enthusiastic road cornering. Also quite surprisingly good on mud. The new Greenguard things are depressingly heavy, although they don't seem to roll too badly. Perhaps I'll start another thread....

Go on, because I was about to start a thread regarding my experience of switch from Marathon HS368 37-622 to Marathon GG 37-622 on my Spa Tourer and have been impressed, :)

Paselas. I commuted on the 700c version for years, including debris strewn country lanes, and they are reasonably tough. Only one side wall rip and I rode over a broken bottle to get that. I have used the 26x1.75 on a touring tandem with no problems. Lightweight(ish), light tread, foldable available.

Decision made - as I was after something like SB8s, it turns out DTC folding SB8s come in 26x1.75...
