Hi all does anyone have any information on above,just purchased bike litteraly only been ridden a few times I also have the original receipt from 1994 all components shimano rx100 dated r&s 93/94 wondered if anyone has a copy showing this bike in the Raleigh catalogue any info gratefully received thanks richard

I always liked the look of the shiny 8-speed RX100 groupset..my contemporary hubs were the duller, painted 105 ones (1056). For me this is the "classic" Shimano era!!

One possible issue to watch for (that my 1056 hubs share) is that you may be limited to 12 tooth minimum cassettes (not the 11 tòoth that is on some modern 8 speed cassettes). The pic in the original Shimano brochure looks like my hubs....8 speed width but with weird vestigal uniglide threads rather than the flat area needed for an 11 tooth cog. Not a real issue though since there are still plenty of Shimano 12-up and 13-up 8-speed cassettes available new.

That (1991) pic shows a 7s system, (105SC didn't go 8s until 1993, so the RX100 groupset -arguably the tiagra of its day- was 7s only for the first few years) and yes it has a hybrid freehub body which will accept UG or HG sprockets, but it is 7s length not 8s length. When it was first introduced, freehubs to accept HG-only with an 11T sprocket was called HG-C, with splines that don't extend the full length of the freehub body. The HG-C acronym soon fell by the wayside, but really all modern HG systems are strictly speaking 'HG-C' not just 'HG'.

Fair enough regarding the pic Brucey...it may well be a 7 speed groupset in the brochure. Still looks nice though (EDIT..I counted the cogs..it is indeed the 7 speed version)

However my 8 speed 1056 hubs DO have screw threads on..so its quite possible the 8 speed RX100 hubs did as well at some point. Here's my FH-1056 hub for your perusal...hopefully you can see its a 35mm (i.e 8 speed) freehub with "vestigal" uniglide threads. I have also compared it with a modern 10 speed 105 hub so you can compare with "HG-C" on the same photo. I got the impression from your post you had not seen an 8 speed THREADED HG freehub before so I have tried to illustrate it properly?

Not sure which freehub variant the Raleigh Equinox will have but the chances are it will be one of the two "HG" flavours (threaded or unthreaded) rather than "HG-C" thus limiting it to 12 teeth and up. I have just tried fitting an HG40 11 tooth top cog to the 1056 hub shown above and it doesn't fit of course ...wheras my 8 speed Sunrace 12-32 fits fine..as you would expect.

It almost made sense in Ultegra, but I have no idea why they made 8s UG/HG compatible freehubs in the 105 and RX100 groupsets, in that 8s UG cassettes have always been like rocking horse poop.

If you are desperate to use an HG-C cassette you can grind off the last couple of threads, but the engagement with the 11T sprocket is then minimal.

It makes even less sense, 8 speed FH-1056 (105) has threaded body and FH-A551(RX100) does not.

Brucey I can only think that the tooling Shimano had at the time added these Uniglide threads ANYWAY, maybe in the same operation that put the internal threads in the shell for the HG lockring, and it was easier to use this HG shell for everyone? I mean..they even had the UG threads on their XTR 8 speed hubs..who in their right mind is going to put a Uniglide cassette on that??!! (see pic)

Good spot with the datasheets Colin. From what you have posted in looks like the OP will have no hassle putting 11-up cassettes on his RX100 hubs should he/she wish to - contrary to my first post. Presumably by the time 8-speed "trickled down" to RX100 they had finalised on the HG-C shell. Even better I guess

Hmm..yes.. I have considered that, or simply swapping in the newer 105 HG-C hub that is in the picture. But I have two of these old 1056 hubs (one still in a working wheel on my Dawes Galaxy). The hubs still spin nicely so I am going to service and stick with them for now. The one in I put in the picture has outlasted two wheels ...I have bought some new 12 tooth top cogs and will simply swap 11 tooth cogs out where necessary..or use the Sunrace 12-32 8 speed cassette we discussed in another thread.
