Hi,
Does make you wonder how someone who is altogether would fall through the cracks.

Awful sad story. Here's her obituary in the Washington Post:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2 ... 76daa1283f

And this is from Kelly's last blog post in Velo News:
“This is probably the point when you’ll expect me to say something cliche like, ‘Time management is everything.’ Or perhaps you’re expecting a nice, encouraging slogan like, ‘Being a student only makes me a better athlete!’ After all, I somehow make everything work, right? Sure. Yeah, that’s somewhat accurate. But the truth is that most of the time, I don’t make everything work. It’s like juggling with knives, but I really am dropping a lot of them. It’s just that most of them hit the floor and not me.”

This is always a shock when someone so young appears to be on top of their game and ends up like this.
Sad indeed and so sorry for those around her.

My heart goes out to her family and friends, what an awful thing to do to those that love you .... :(

Such talent, such a waste. :(

Can we take a step back?

This young lady had suffered a head injury

There is evidence that such an injury could be a contributory factor with depression, memory loss, and depression being key factors.

Before we all make assumptions, let's consider some of the factors that may have contributed.

It was not meant as a response to your post, but as a wider comment

Yep, I understood that but I didn't want to leave post there until I'd gathered all the facts of the case.

How sad, though I didn't know of her.
It's a reminder that depression doesn't respect talent, ability, intelligence, or anything else.

Maybe I shouldn't even have posted the quote from the girl's last blog post, although it was quoted in the obituary. It's hard to try to understand and still be sympathetic without being insensitive.

Quite right!
And you never know when and how it'll strike,it's devastating when it does.

I think that what is relevant here is that no matter what the reasons, the pressures and the "final straw" there were organisations involved that could and should have spotted the "danger signs" and done something.

I read that the danger signs were very much there, and recognised, indeed she had previously attempted suicide in January. Only increases the tragedy. I had no idea that concussion could set depression in train, as it seems to have done in this case.
