Rookie Cycle Tour from London to Trieste
Re: Rookie Cycle Tour from London to Trieste
Hi Tyre lady.
I knew you would be fine.
The first few days always seem the most difficult.

So stayed a day more in one place to catch up with sleep. Off to Netherlands and then Germany
Eek. Don’t overdo it- it’s supposed to be enjoyable! I’ve just been reading Jill Homer’s book about cycling the great divide (she is definitely hardcore) and whilst there’s a small percentage of tourers who do this sort of distance daily It’s not compulsory.
Plus one for people who had confidence in your ability.

Just completed 2 x 140k. Am enjoying the route so far mrs h

Only 317 days left then, but it should be enough

The chaps are better at this sort of thing but maybe try zinc cream (like for babies).
Have you measured your remaining distance against the time available? What daily average do you need- if 140km feels comfortable that’s fine. It is in the high side for touring but you are an athlete so if it works good for you.

Keep the area clean & wash your shorts thoroughly every day!
Some nappy cream might help, but it might be better to ask at a chemist, rather than risk making it worse? If it's caused by blocked pores, zinc cream could conceivably make it worse.
It may be worth a pm to eileithyia, if she doesn't notice this post. She's a midwife & cyclist.

I hesitate to make suggestions here but for what it's worth.
I would suggest cleaning with surgical spirit at the end of the day - ( or Vodka ?)
When you set out you could use sudacrem or what ever audaxers anoint themselves with for long distances.
I'm one of the heretics who wear underwear under padded shorts - this is frowned upon by those who consider themselves to be part of the cognoscenti.
If all else fails you could always copy the old professionals and cycle with a raw steak in your shorts.
(I think you need a new steak every day)
Re: Rookie Cycle Tour from London to Trieste
Thanks all. Have now cleaned the area and using an antiseptic cream. It has gone down Was a bit of a shock though thankfully not sore.
Yesterday met someone with a sore bum (also a rookie) and gave him some Vaseline which he said made it more bare-able. We rode together for 17km at @20km until he mentioned “Brexit” and apparently I got faster!!!
Anyhow he decided to ease off as he was worried about zee bum and I was doing another Long ride to meet a friend in Speyer (170km). YNow taking a one day holiday.
Love the Rhine part into Bingen. So beautiful m

Am trying to be vegetarian as it is a Low carbon challenge
Eating lots of bakery stuff though. Maybe too much!!!
Trying to slow down by starting later..,and the hills have slowed me down so only 112k covered today. Mostly industrial areas and urban areas. Stuttgart sucks. All my German friend’s said so and I agree

I like Stuttgart. I think the town centre is nice. But my mother lived there for a while, so I have a sort of soft spot for it.

Re: Rookie Cycle Tour from London to Trieste
Today all navigation cycle routes were having fun with me. At first I masochistically also thought it was fun pushing a bicycle thru some miles of snow....

But after the 3rd time it was not fun so got onto the motorway. That too was not fun. So as I contemplated returning to the quiet snowy tracks I was enticed to stay in the Alpen yoga retreat https://www.instagram.com/p/BwQKU00AeEU ... myp6ts1wy6
Going check out their waste minimisation and carbon reduction...
