Looking for data on cycling in Greater Manchester

Post by xaviercorti »

I am currently writing my undergrad dissertation on cycling in Greater Manchester and am looking for data sets which have locations attached so I can map them via GIS software. The kind of data I am looking for is any data on safety, health, pollution, segregated cycle paths etc. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

https://bikedata.cyclestreets.net will have some data, including collisions. Protected cycleways (please don't repeat the UK politicians' lie of calling them segregated - walkers are allowed on almost all of them in the UK) are shown on the osm.org base data which I hope you already know about, but the tagging isn't completely consistent. Health outcomes data is no longer published at the lower Statistical Output Areas in my locality and I fear that may have been axed nationally. Pollution monitor data should be available online but I don't know Manchester's equivalent of http://www.NorfolkAirQuality.net
MJR, mostly pedalling 3-speed roadsters. KL+West Norfolk BUG incl social easy rides http://www.klwnbug.co.uk

I don't know if this is useful, I used this recently, albeit not in Manchester, but you can change location

A copy of my 1974 University of Sheffield MA dissertation 'Planning for the Urban Cyclist: a Study of Greater Manchester' should be still available in the Manchester City Library. Otherwise the University of Warwick cycling archive has a copy. You may find this of use, There was still a healthy amond unt of cycling then but the local authorities were only interested in catering for the motorist although car ownership was very low at the time. I was a member of the Greater Manchester Transport Action Group. You may find some of their publications in the City Library. I did most of my research in the Library - a great institution then and I hope still.

I tried to get funding, but failed, to do a 1994 follow study revisiting the original surveys of school, university and CTC members.

Things seem to be on the move in Greater Manchester thanks to Burnham, Boardman and Co.

Good luck with the study.
