Over exercise?

Post by gbnz »

Any idea what issues relate to "over exercise"? Have to say I've no cardio-vascular problems, but had definate looks of disapproval from a hospital consultant 4-5 days ago (NB.In the previous week I'd only done 85-90 miles on the bike, a 70 minute high paced swim, 4-5 No. (1.5-2Hr) gym sessions

It's clear what threw him is the simple fact that I'll walk 5-10miles as a matter of routine, if not daily, quite often - down to the beach, the supermarkets, along the coast et al. Now that the *&%£$^&( NHS have declared me disabled, banned me from employment, I have no *%$££$%^& choice

Obviously I'm aware of the issues with having a flat out cardio workout, followed by another, or a session on weights followed by another, just wondering if anyone else has had disapproval?

Looking at it from the other angle, very few people are getting enough exercise. According to this book:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/ ... eid-review

even exercise isn't enough - our bodies are designed for physical work. The author believes that relying on "exercise" alone isn't enough, we should be doing physical work at work. It sounds like you're certainly not overdoing it but I'm no doctor.

I have a theory, which some may agree with?
If presenting oneself to a Doctor with (say) a knee problem the patient will be asked "do you do any exercise?" If the answer is "no", he'll be told "well you should do more exercise, that will be good for you!" If the patient answers 'yes... I do a 3 mile walk every day' He'll be given the advice that he's done too much. I've experienced 'victim blaming' like this from the medical professionals.

Do you factor rest into your regime?

Oh yes, it's fairly critical if one's to benefit from heavy exercise I.e. I'd always allow 72-96 hr's between heavy workouts on weights.

Though can't wait to get back on the bike / down the pool - gym after an enforced 3-4 days break (Exceptionally heavy cold)

There's been times when I've worked physically hard 7days a week for months on end without a break and times when I've been cycling 200 to 250miles a week.
Both situations have left me lean and ripped but after a while jaded physically and mentally.
If the OP is enjoying his level of exercise then who am I to say otherwise, but there may come a time when the the mind,it's usually the mind first that says I've enough of it give me a rest.
Then there's the down when the mind feels guilty for not doing the level of excercise it was before,it can lead to a vicious circle.

Does anyone else suffer annoying bugs and lergy when they over do it with the exercise? I'm currently enduring my second head cold in 6 weeks, and I'm wondering if a very hectic cycling schedule during that time, combined with my every-other-day weights routine might have just ground me down a little but. The problem is my brain still thinks it's in a 21 year old body.

If you have a cold then you caught it from some else who had a cold, it's a virus.
What hard excercise does do is makes you tired and this can suppress your immune system for a short while and therefore make you more susceptible to catching a cold from another person.

Yeah; chum of mine with suspected narcolepsy mentioned to the specialist that he liked to cycle 100 km or more once or twice a week. Specialist told him he was daft, 20 km was perfect; chum should consult a psychiatrist. Chum laughed in his face, whereupon the narco got stroppy and threatened to have his driving licence suspended, using the narcolepsy as a pretext.

Oh aye, I'm hearing from my doc these days that I expect to be able to do too much "for a man of my age". Hell, Robert Marchand did the Tourmalet when he was 88 and I'm a lot younger than that; why shouldn't I ride 150 km for a pizza?

Maybe it's the pizza that's just for young folk.

Have to admit it's a psychiatrist who disapproved of my "exercise" regime last week! In my case, all the issues resulting in my seeing a psychiatrist were caused by the *&%$%&* NHS blocking me from driving, employment and at the risk of homelessness for the last seven months. B£$^&&&'s

I found that as I got older my immune system became a bit hyper, with the onset of hay fever and vigorous skin pops from the midge. Strangely, I also seemed to get far fewer colds. I've had two in the last 14 years, as I recall. In my yoof I seemed to have a cold every six weeks - although I was doing an awful lot of miles (including racing miles) at the time. I suspect what I lacked was an ideal diet as there was no spare dosh at all in them days. I was also somewhat ripped - not enough body fat, which I understand is a sort of repository and reserve of vitamins or other stuff required for full health........?

These days I seem to be almost immune to colds and other minor ailments, then. I had non-Hodge lymphoma 4 years ago and the cure seems to have rebooted my immune system. It's still sensitive to the tree pollen but I now have none of the cyclist niggles such as a touch of athletes foot, a pike up the nose and so forth. And a small wart I had for years and years has shrunk and dropped off. (I believe they're some sort of viral thing).

Whether to have the flu jab? Whether to have the pneumonia jab instead, since it's that which seems to kill orf old fogeys who do get a bout of flu, rather than the flu itself.

I do dread the slow degeneration in which I become a pest-gimmer on a perch in a gimmery somewhere, costing a fortune (to the ladywife and the NHS) whilst getting tortured by a large male "nurse" on less than minimum pay. I'd rather drop dead of brain blott or some such whilst trying to catch the wheel of a cheeky passing-sprog going up a hill. :-) All this talk about "resting" or "not overdoing it" is for pencil-necks!

Indeed. The risks of under-exercising far outweigh the risks of over-exercising. Health professionals are by nature risk-averse and often not well versed in data relating to large volume exercise (as it's something they probably rarely encounter!) so are likely to urge caution whether clinically based or not.

Unless you have underlying conditions that dictate otherwise, do what you enjoy while you can!

As colds are viruses once you have had that particular one you are immune. The problem is they constantly mutate but as you get on there are fewer colds that you can catch.

Whenever the health profession have asked me the question I've only had positive feedback. Mind you, I don't tell them quite how much riding I do, just confirm its at least their 20/40 mins three times a week (they probably would gawp at my usual 15 hours!) OTOH, as a yoof I would race 5 times a week, riding to and from most of those as well as doing weights in school PE sessions. These days I don't do the weights or the racing but when working I commuted 5/6 days a week, there was often heavy lifting each day and i'd quite possibly do 'training' before or after work too.

Its quite possible to do lots of exercise without doing the intensity - indeed out of all my exercise, less than 20% could be considered hard, most of my miles are done in HR Zones 2/3 and even 1!

Is there some sort of scale/guide to use relating age / intensity / time? If not, how can anyone say amount x is too much?

(I do get antsy if I can't get out for a few days - this lasts about a week after which its difficult to start again! )
