Ah but no! The bollard had a hiviz (white) stripe on it. That's why the driver didn't see it. We all know that motorists are completely blind to anything sporting hi-viz......

It couldn't have happened to a more deserving case, could it?

I'm not sure. Aren't cars made to crumple easily these days, so as to protect the occupants from the shock of an impact?

Many years ago, my mother (as she tearfully admitted to us, afterwards) started her car in the garage whilst it was still in gear. It jerked forward, hitting a workbench about two feet away, and bending the handle of a vice fixed to the bench: a 15mm thick tommy-bar of solid steel. As well as making a serious dent in the car of course - although not quite as serious as the car in the picture.

I still have that vice: it is still usable, although I've never managed to straighten the tommy-bar.

It had a bike leant against it. It's well known that bikes make their riders disappear so it happened to the bollard too.

It all depends what 'a fair pace' is considered to be in any given circumstance,I was thinking probably 10mph or so.I've seen people drive into parking spaces at what I would consider waayyy too fast,10mph maybe,then hit the brake in full confidence that the car would stop,obviously the drivers confidence left a leettle to be desired in this case.

This reminds me of the winter of discontent. During the miners strike coachs full of blackleg miners were escorted to the colliery by police cars in front and behind the convoy. The pickets built a snowman to occupy themselve outside the colliery gates. The leading police car had great delight in swerving onto the verge demolishing the snowman in the process. After several days the pickets discreetly built the snowman over a concrete bollard and cheered when the inevitable collision occured.
