Croatia to Montenegro border

Post by ChrisF »

For anyone planning to ride down the Adriatic at the moment: you cannot cross into Montenegro on the minor road no. 516, near Vitaljina. This road is marked as a cycle route. It seems they are rebuilding the customs post and the road is totally closed. Oddly there are no warnings at all where this road leaves the main road! So you need to retrace 14km and then enter Montenegro on the main road. The main road isn't too busy (in May anyway).

We had a similar experience a couple of years ago where a border crossing marked on maps and signed from Albania into Montenegro was closed to foreigners and open to locals, meant a substantial detour and ride back. Something to do with a shortage of border officers.
No one was very concerned except us!
On another occasion we crossed a closed-by-snow alpine road from Kosovo into Montenegro and rode past the shuttered border post so perhaps it was karma in the end.
Lovely place to bike tour though.

This occurs with many of the smaller states in Europe. If you think your border crossing is on a secondary road, there are sources to see hours and eligibility for that border crossing.
I wish it were as easy as riding a bike
