Brake pad recommendations please.
Brake pad recommendations please.
Hi guys,
I should renew the brake pads on my Roberts tourer with Shimano cantis (1980s), rims are Mavic MA3s if that helps.
Suggestions appreciated.
John.

Re: Brake pad recommendations please.
do your cantis use post mount on bolt-on brake blocks? If the latter are they M-system ones? If you have a photo or model number of your brake then please post it. IME old shimano brake blocks have often turned hard and will be horrible to use as well as wreck your rims.

Thanks Brucey, they're post mount and no markings on them apart from Shimano (cantis at right angle to fork and seat stays).

Clarks CP522
or Koolstop Cross pad (unthreaded version).
Latter will be essential if you have wide rims and a narrow space between your fork blades.

Re: Brake pad recommendations please.
I would suggest that you get some cartridge type brake blocks. There are two different sorts
1) XTR copies (eg clarks) which use a 72mm insert and
2) road bike sized ones (which use a smaller insert)
They are more expensive to buy in the first place (eg Kool Stop 'cross') but there is a wider choice of inserts for the latter. Also, being shorter, the brake blocks won't be so likely to hit the fork legs which can happen with the 72mm type.

Those are the cantis I have and rims are narrow-ish (MA3s) relatively wide (50mm) between fork legs: although canti posts are slightly inboard of the legs.
Thanks guys, John.

Re: Brake pad recommendations please.
I've bought several different types of brake pads (road caliper, 'vee' etc) from Hopkinson cycles on ebay and found them satisfactory. Can't find them much cheaper anywhere else & they appear to be the genuine article, not some rebranded hash.

I have no associations with this shop, just a reasonably satisfied customer.

Re: Brake pad recommendations please.
I recommend Koolstop Salmon pads (the colour, sort of an orange colour). They are the best I've found for not wearing rims out quickly by picking up grit or aluminium from the braking surfaces.
I use them on my old Dawes, which is running low pro cantis with post-type pads and insufficient clearance for V-brake style canti pads.

One of them is BR-MT62, the other one does indeed look just like it .
