I moved to pointing out the phoney driver to the following motorists. If you can't stop the phone abuser, you might as well warn those behind that he/she will probably drive badly.

What should I do when driving, stopped at the lights, I spot that the driver behind is telephoning? Should I refuse to move off to stop (minimise) an offence?
Entertainer, juvenile, curmudgeon, PoB, 30120 Cycling-of course, but it is far better on a Gillott We love safety cameras, we hate bullies

Doesn't stop the offence. If you've spotted them, remember to send your dash cam footage to the police when you get home. Not much else you can do. Another way that cycling is more socially responsible!

My friend the off-duty British Transport Policeman has a wonderful approach to motorists on their phones and in earshot - he just yells authoritatively 'put that phone down!'.
It leaves no room for argument and seems to work every time.
What a lot of mean spirited people you are ! The lady was clearly concerned about the OP safety and got into a debate of which she did not know how contentious it is. Can you wonder why she is of the opinion she is given all of the pro helmet debate she must read of. Oh and lighten up everyone however you feel its really not going to matter one iota.

No,such people are busybodies who don't know when to mind their own business. I'll debate helmets with anyone,what I won't do is be told that I should be wearing one by someone who knows sweet FA about them or their usefulness. I'm getting piddled off enough as it is with idiot drivers treating me like something stuck on the bottom of their shoe,without people interfering with my freedom!

Seriously there's people who have opinions and don't see anything wrong with sharing them. On a forum it's considered positive, in real life it's often considered negative.
IMHO (and I'm a stranger giving you advice without the right to do so) it's really not even worth acknowledgement. You smiled at the positive but could you have played deaf to the negative? You were riding away so could easily have just missed the last comment. Helmet choice is yours as is ignoring the self righteous telling you what to do.
